A CLOSER LOOK AT CALENDAR EVENTS

INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY OBSERVED

  • The Senior Center will be closed Friday, July 3, 2009 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. No meals will be delivered to our home delivered clients on this day. The center will re-open with regular business hours on Monday, July 6, 2009.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION PLANNED FOR JULY 3

  • The Site Council will be holding the annual Independence Day Celebration on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 10:15. Everyone is invited to wear red, white and blue and join in on the “I Love America” Bingo starting at 10:15. Then following we will post the colors and have a Patriotic Sing-A-Long. You will not want to miss this, so please put this on your calendar and plan to attend.

A.P.P.L.E. PROJECT PAPERWORK SERVICE ANNOUNCES NEW TIME

  • The APPLE Project Paperwork Serve, a free paperwork service for senior adults, announces a new time for visits to the center starting in July; 10:30 on Thursdays. Every Thursday the APPLE Project Paperwork Service is here at our center to assist anyone with their paperwork service needs and the time will move to 10:30 from now on. Also, there's a new face at APPLE - Dodie Hodges. Dodie is APPLE's new consumer educator and along with Jo Boyer and Jean Gooden, Director, they will be available at the Senior Center on Thursdays at 10:30 to assist you with any of your Applications, Personal Papers, Legal, and Environmental paperwork needs.

YOU CAN HELP US BOOST OUR NUMBERS

  • We are in our usual summer slump and we need you to help us boost our numbers in attendance. You can invite your friends, family members, neighbors, friends from church, your Sunday School class or senior group at your church, Garden Club, Extension Clubs… anyone you are in contact with can be invited to come to the Center. Help us boost our numbers to fill our dining room.

    COMMUNITY PARTNER HOLDS BINGO ACTIVITY

  • One of our Community Partners, Life Care Center, is holding its monthly Bingo activity on Wednesday, July 15 at 3:00. The theme for this month’s S.O.S. (Serving Our Seniors) bingo activity is a Summer Picnic theme. Everyone is invited to attend. The Bingo activity is at their location at 2852 Independence St. in Cape.

    VOLUNTEERS NEEDED DURING SUMMER MONTHS…

As we approach summer many of our volunteers will be taking time off to travel or keep grandchildren. We ask that you spread our volunteer message to all you know; at church, at groups you belong to, to family members and out-of-school children. All of working together can fill up the calendar, but we all need o spread the word quickly and with everyone we know. Thank you in advance for helping!

    This Means YOU!!

    Louise

HAVE YOU JOINED THE BUCK-A-MONTH CLUB? IT'S NEVER TOO LATE!

Louise Wallace is eager to put your name on the buck-a-month board. What is it, you ask? The buck-a-month club is a way to support the Senior Center with building expenses. Although there is no longer a mortgage on the building, there are still plenty of expenses. Roof leaks, heating and air conditioner repairs, and the list goes on and on. Just like at your own home, a building this size requires constant repairs.

For only $1 each month or $12 per year, you can have your name posted on the Wall of Fame on the North wall of the dining room. Your name will appear with bright shiny stars after it for each month you have paid. Please see Louis Wallace today to join. I think the best part about this club is there are no meetings to attend and no offices to hold.

Don't sit in the dumps..Move It! Move It!

HAVE YOU GOT THE "SUMMER TIME BLUES?"

Neighbors spending time with grandkids and family and being out of town on vacation along with the heat and humidity might have you feeling alone and friendless - could be a case of the "Summer Time Blues". A quick fix when this happens, is to come to the Senior Center.

Get up, get dressed and come to the Center. Visit with other folks, attend the many activities each day, work puzzles and talk and visit with the regulars, go table to table and make new friends, have lunch, volunteer… why the list is endless! But the worst thing to do is stay home. When you have that feeling…we've got the cure for the "Summer Time Blues" at the Center!!!!

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

PAINTING GROUP LOOKING FOR NEW PAINTERS

The Monday and Tuesday Painting Time group would love to have you join them for their Painting Time. They meet every Monday and Tuesday from 12:30 to 3:30 and everyone does their own thing. They are a very talented group AND would love to have you with them. Take a look at what they are doing while they are painting in the dining room.

    Ummmm! Good Coffee!

Every morning, at 10 am, we put out coffee along with danish and some other treat to tempt your taste buds. Why not come on out to the Center and spend some quiet time with friends and a good cup of coffee tomorrow?

There is usually a card game or two going on or you can quietly put together jig saw puzzles with others. The computers are always available for your use and we have a number of current magazines for quiet reading while sitting in our comfy sofa's. Bessie's Boutique is a fun second hand store to browse through. Check out our Calendar of Events to see what is scheduled on a day to day basis. There's surely something that you can participate in or contribute to with your talents.

    UPCOMING EVENTS!!

MEMORIALS TO CENTER HONORS THE DECEASED

Recently, we have received several memorials to the Senior Center to memorialize those who have passed away. We want to thank any of you who remembered the Senior Center in your estate planning by remembering us with a gift.

When memorial gifts are given to the Center, it provides income which ensures the Center will be here for years to come. When the total gift received in the name of one person reaches $50, their name will be placed on the Memorial Plaque in the hallway. Our memorial donation envelopes are located on top of the antique replica radio beside the office door. For further information, contact administrative personnel at the Center. We can further direct you in having a bequest made to the Senior Center.

      WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE SENIOR CENTER ON A DAILY BASIS???

Each and every day, all of us have the opportunity to support the Center in so many different ways. The list is nearly unlimited, but let me try to name a few:

  • Save all aluminum; cans, foil, old lawn chair frames, guttering, etc. Saving aluminum cans generates income for the building mortgage.

  • Join the Buck-A-Month Club. For only $1 a month, or $12 per year, and get your name on the prestigious wall of fame board. Only $1 per month!

  • Participate in weekly raffles on Thursday. By purchasing tickets you are supporting the building fund and the financial obligations it has. Who knows, you might win something really neat!

  • Each Wednesday we have Donuts for Dollars, which is a bag of donuts for $1, and this too goes toward the building fund.

  • Pennies (or loose change) in the jar at the front desk helps the building fund. You would be surprised how quickly change adds up! Lighten your load, empty your pockets of those loose coins, and help the Center’s building fund.

  • Make a contribution to Marian Charities. We are the very fortunate recipients of an almost matching fund program through Marian Charities. We have to collect $250 each month of newly generated money through your donations and then we send that money in, and in about 1 week, we receive back a $400 check from Marian Charities. What a deal! I think we wish we could do that with our own money! All of the Board Members contribute each month, but more are needed to reach the magic number of $250. Donations vary from a few dollars, $5 or $10 to much more, as some choose to give a one-time annual gift. This is so easy to do, but makes a huge difference in the Center’s building fund budget. See Bill Ford or Susan in the office to contribute TODAY.

  • Purchase a soda from the soda machine. The soda machine in the dining room sells sodas for a small price, compared to other vending machines around town, and the income from the machine goes to the building fund. A cool refreshing way to help the building fund.

As you can see, there are plenty of things we all can do to help our Center.

    GIFT CERTIFICATES MAKE GREAT GIFTS

When your children or grandchildren ask what they can buy you for birthdays, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day or "Just Because", why not request a gift certificate for your meals here at the Senior Center?

We have them available for any amount, and no time expiration. They may be purchased in the office during regular business hours. These are good for home-delivered meals as well as in-house congregate meals.
