What happens at a Toastmasters meeting?
A toastmasters meeting gives members a chance to practice their speaking skills. The general format of the meeting is:
  • Business
  • Toastmaster and meeting role introductions
  • Word of the Day
  • Thought of the Day
  • Table Topics (impromptu speaking)
  • Prepared Speeches (up to 3 per meeting)
  • Evaluators comments

Each week, members sign up for the roles in which they would like to particpate. Here's a description of the various opportunities for getting involved in a meeting:

Toastmaster: Acts as the general host and conducts the meeting.

Word of the Day: Selects the "word of the day", encouraging members to increase their vocabulary.

Thought of the Day: Shares an inspirational and motivational quote with the group.

Table Topics Master: Chooses a topic, then asks members to respond with a 1 to 2 minutes answer to questions related to that topic. Allows members to practice "thinking on their feet".
Speaker: A major portion of each meeting is centered around three speakers. Their speeches are prepared based on objectives found in their project manual, and typically last from 5 to 7 minutes.
Evaluator: After every prepared speech, the speaker receives an evaluation, both oral and written, to help them in becoming a better speaker.
The Timer: Keeps track of how long each speaker speaks, noting whether they have stayed within their alloted time guidelines.
Grammarian/"AH" Counter: Notes words and sounds used as "fillers", as well as being on the look out for incorrect grammar and usage.

General Evaluator: Evaluates the entire meeting on the success of the evening.
