MACH 12
May 4th & 5th, 2012

2011 PICTURES ARE IN LEFT COLUMN UNDER MACH SLIDESHOW LINK.

Unofficially, this Ride To Eat (RTE) has been going on for several years. My brother Dean and I got it into our heads one weekend to take off and enjoy some good Mississippi and Louisiana back road riding in search of Cajun crawfish. A few years later, Rick (Skippy) Melling joined us and we officially made it a W.O.T.I. Ride To Eat. Skippy suggested we name it MACH (Mississippi Area Crawfish Hunt) plus the year. After trying different dates, we eventually decided to lock in the first Friday and Saturday of May.

The 2009 ride was to the Mississippi Petrified Forest

HERE'S HOW IT'S DONE: While you can arrive anytime you want, we encourage participants to arrive by Friday afternoon at the latest. If you arrive prior to Friday afternoon, you can consider it free time to spend as you choose. Vicksburg and the surrounding communities are rich in Civil War history. The Vacation/Attractions site has all sorts of information to share with you.

At 6:00pm Friday, we all ride to dinner together to the host restaurant. I've provided more info on that below.

Saturday morning, after you've eaten a hot breakfast provided by our host motel, we'll head out on a scenic ride at 9 am. Built into our ride or day in the past, we have visited sites of interest such as the local playhouse's longest running melodrama Gold in the Hills, a visit to the McRaven Home, and a stop at the Louisiana Penitentiary Museum - also known as Angola Prison - once the bloodiest prison in America. This years planned ride and site of interest stop will be just as much fun and out of the ordinary as the past years have been.

After lunch, we continue our ride. Later in the afternoon, we will eventually end up at the host motel so you can rest up before riding out to dinner - or not.

In 2009 we had our first pot-luck in the motel dining room. This was well received and will be our Saturday night dinner as long as interest is there. Here is how it works, get food, bring it to dining room, share what you brung. Check out other people's food, help them share theirs. If you do want to go back to Toney's, see the link to their restaurant below to make a reservation (or do it before you leave on Friday night). They are very popular! Vicksburg is reknown for their parking lot and curbside crawfish vendors, so that's always a popular item for the pot-luck.

Each evening there are parking lot visits amongst everyone where we all kick tires, check out each others' bikes, tell lies, relax and get to know each other.

Sunday morning, we all get up at our leisure and begin to say our fond farewells. Most riders get up pretty early because of the distance they need to cover to get home.

Use the handy dandy contact link at the bottom of this page to let us know that you are joining us and we'll add you to the participant list to the left. Thanks, and we hope you’ll kick start your riding season and join us in the next Mississippi Area Crawfish Hunt.

MOTEL INFORMATION: The Mississippi Area Crawfish Hunt is held in Vicksburg, Mississippi the first Friday and Saturday of May. The host motel will be the Best Western (phone 601-636-5800 or 800-WESTERN).

The motel has a complimentary full hot breakfast bar that includes eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy, belgian waffles, along with a full variety of sweet rolls, muffins and toast. Juice, coffee, tea and cereals with fresh fruit included.

They also have a fitness room and an indoor pool, so bring your bathing suit in case you want to relax before hitting the sack.

The motel is located on the North Outer Road at Exit 1 or 3 off I-20. Spring in Vicksburg is a very busy tourist destination, so we encourage you to book your rooms early.

From this roost, there is easy access to gasoline, groceries, adult beverages, and ice cream!

RESTAURANT INFORMATION: Toney’s located at 1903 Mission 66 in Vicksburg is our restaurant of choice for our dinner gathering on Friday night. They offer an AYCE crawfish buffet or you can order from the menu. The steaks are said to be very good, and several people seem to enjoy them. If you are not sure about crawfish, just try a couple to see if you like them. If you do, there are plenty more and someone will be ready to show you how it's done.
