HELP US PRESERVE THE HISTORY AND DIGNITY OF PALMER

Palmer is a small mining town which is in the Mark Twain National Forest. The town which was once rich with minerals is now rich with history. Families were born and buried there, families who laughed and cried, and fought their battles with pride. Yes, our land is scarred. But they are honest scars, proof of the struggle of good men scratching the earth to feed their families. All that is left of Palmer are those scars, the church, the cemetery, and our memories.

Once again, we must rise up and fight to save our heritage. Thirty years ago we fought the US Forest Service to save our old Palmer store. We lost the fight. This time, we must fight to save Palmer. If we lose this fight, all will be lost.

The honest scars will be replaced with fresh, meaningless scars. Scars made by the Jeep and ATV clubs just out having fun. The Forest Service proposes to conduct a three year study to evaluate motorized trail systems. The wildlife will be chased away. It won't be safe to hike or fish. Palmer will no longer be a quiet, safe place to take your family for the day. It will be a loud, dusty, dangerous place enjoyed only by the people who neither know nor care about the families and homes which once existed there.

In 1905, Theodore Roosevelt created the US Forest Service. He appointed Gifford Pinchot as America's first forester. The goal popularized by Pinchot and the Forest Service was to sustain the nation's forest "for the greatest good, for the greatest number, for the longest time".

If the Jeep and ATV clubs come in, the forests will become polluted, eroded, and scarred beyond belief. The lakes will no longer be a place to swim or fish. The hunters, fishermen, hikers, equestrians, Sunday drivers, and families will be forced out. The forest cannot survive being crushed by hundreds of OHV's everyday or every weekend. Soon the forest will become a barren wasteland. And Palmer will no longer exist.

Please help us leave a little of the past for our generations of tomorrow to look upon and dream a little. too. Contact the US Forest Service and let them know that we want to keep Palmer just like it is.

Join Us Today

We would like to invite you to become a member of the Palmer page. There are no membership dues, there are no meetings. Please join us in our fight against the proposed Jeep/ATV trail in Palmer. If you are not comfortable writing letters, that is fine. Just put your name with ours to let people know that you are opposed to the proposed trails. Stand with us. The larger our group, the more strength we attain. With every name we put on this page, we get stronger. And if we get strong enough, yes, we can even beat the US Forest Service. Please help us do that. And one day soon, you will take pride in knowing that you helped save the environment, the history, and the dignity of Palmer. Just click on the contact link at the bottom of this page and send us your name, address(optional), and email address. Thanks for your support!

MOTORIZED TRAILS???

We have precious little space
Where we can get away
To some quiet and some solitude
From our hectic everyday.

Our parks and forests, saved
From the land developer
Trying to keep part of this Earth
Safe, pristine, and pure.

But, there are those who don't care
Who seek, to motorize those trails
And like so many other Feds
Looks like the Forest Service fails.

The Rangers should be up in arms
And fighting so hard to preserve
The Nature and the History
Of each and every Reserve.

We don't need the "noisy cycle"
Or any more reduction
Of more of our environment
From those, hell-bent on destruction.

Del Abe" Jones 2-24-2004

  WHAT WOULD HE SAY???

I wonder what Mark Twain would say?
And would he join in the fight?
Would he say, "I don’t want them here."?
Would he say, "It’s just not right!"?
"You named this Forest after me,
To be protected, for all time.
A quiet place for all to share.
What you want, now, that’s a crime!
A few (against the will of most)
Want to destroy it with their "toys"
They’ll take away it’s pristine beauty, And Nature’s little, simple, joys.
This peaceful place of solitude
Will be shattered by the sound
And the air will reek with their fumes
As they tear deep ruts in the ground.
If those people who say, they care
Don’t stand up and speak their mind
Someday, those things which Nature built
Will be few and hard to find."
