By Marlene: At the age of 45 I unexpectedly found myself a widow. My husband died of a heart attack at a friend's Memorial Day party with absolutely no symptoms that I knew of to warn of this impending tragedy.

After living all my young life faithfully attending church regularly, I became a backslider for at least 26 years. Religion was a one sided practice by me in our marriage, and it was very hit or miss at that. I usually prayed and asked for help when our marriage or family life was on hard times. I rarely talked to God with praises or thanks. Backslider though I was, God heard and answered time and time again. When things got back to an even keel, God was not my comfort or guide - the ways of the world were. We often hear or read of people calling out to God in times of great need or peril. That's immediately what happened that day.

The day my husband died, I was amazed to find out that many of our friends "had religion." Sadly, I didn't know that until my husband's death when many dropped to their knees and prayed with me. Our belief's and salvation never came up in casual conversations - ever. Well, better late than never. I thankfully welcomed their prayer and comfort.

Most importantly in the next couple of years I found that the encouragement and support of family, Christian friends, my church along with my resurrected faith and God's never ending love for me would get my son and I through this moment in time. Further, I knew that God would never take a backseat in our lives again. He has made the road of life less bumpy.

I don't believe I would be where I am today without God's intervention at a critical moment. I know in my heart and soul that He has saved me time and time again. He opened my eyes, my heart and never gave up on me. God is the rock that is steadfast and secure.
