| At our last meeting...
Salvation Army, MAJ Bob Fay November 4, 2009 11 members and 3 guests present: MAJ Bob Fay, today’s speaker from the Salvation Army; Lee and Sandy Bodendieck, friends of Louann and prospective members. After announcements and communications, Marshall briefly told of his recent mission trip to Mexico. 23 members of his church travelled to Mexico where they served 450 people in a clinic in 3 days’ time, helped 300 families, repaired a fence around a church, and built 2 houses during their week of mission work. He thanked us for the help that several of our members contributed with needed items and/or money. President Ed then introduced MAJ Bob Fay to tell us a little about the work of the Salvation Army. MAJ Fay and his wife have spent 33 years in the Salvation Army. As officers, they are both pastors and administrators for the programs that the SA provides. 86% of monies donated to the SA goes to their work and only 14% goes to administrative costs. Rev. William Booth started the Salvation Army in the mid-19th century in a very run down area of East London, England. He wanted to address various social concerns and to share the gospel and truth of God to the downtrodden of London. Last year the Gateway Corps of the SA collected over $200,000 for their work throughout the year from the Tree of Lights Campaign. Their offices are located on Union Road and they provide a food pantry, recreation facilities, church programs and disaster relief for all who are in need. The vast majority of the work is done by volunteers and they are always in need of more help. Happy $$$: Sue for Bob’s birthday and their 20th Anniversary; Ed hoping for good peanut and Bellringing weekends; Bob, Judy, Marshall & Rick for today’s speaker; MAJ Fay for his 3rd grandchild; Jeanne for a dinner last night; Louann for Lee & Sandy visiting today; Vern for Carolyn’s birthday.
Board/Business meeting 14 members and no guests present. After announcements and communications, Secretary Rick read the minutes of our last Board Meeting and Treasurer Vern presented his report. Both were approved as given. Jeanne thanked those who helped at “Reading is Fun” this morning and is doing the Terrific Kids and Outstanding Students each month. Club members will begin next week to bring one non-perishable food item to the meeting each week for Feed My People. It is felt that this will be a much easier way to remember to bring them. Gerry says FMP has received our request for one large family or two smaller families for the Adopt-a-Family program at Christmas. Happy $$$: Jeanne for today’s helpers at RIF; Ed for a good doctor report; Steve for a good family vacation and doctor report; Judy for a good weekend retreat; Sherry is finally feeling better; Bob will be a great-grandpa; Emily for a good weekend; Sue for her sons’ report cards; Vern for today’s good attendance; Gerry for her upcoming trip; Carla for Sherry and Marge doing well; Louann for hitting a Royal Flush in Las Vegas.
Outstanding Student 8 members and 8 guests present: Terry Noble, Mehlville School District Superintendent; Ben Gratza (Outstanding Student from Green Park Christian Academy), his parents Rick & Karen Gratza, Grandma Ann Gratza, grand-parents Ben & Harlean Kettler, and his teacher Rebecca Tuller. President Ed and others made several announcements and passed around communications, and then Superintendent Terry Noble told us about the Mehlville School District. Terry thanked our club for all we do to help the District and asked for our continuing support. They could face some very serious financial problems in the next couple of years. Terry is very proud of the students, teachers, administrators and parents of the district for achiev-ing the “Distinction in Performance Award” from the State Department of Education. He explained that the District must meet 14 standards of proficiency for this award and has done so for 6 of the last 8 years. Jeanne Crews then introduced Outstanding Student Ben Gratza. Ben is quite involved in school activities including a play that will be performed in December, the Math Olympics, and makes very good grades. Outside of school, he plays football, is in Boy Scouts and is working diligently toward his Eagle Scout Award. He plans to attend either Mehlville High School or Green Park Christian Academy High School next year. After graduation, he plans to go on to college. Happy $$$: Carla, Rick, Sue, Ann and Harlean for Ben’s honor; Karen & Rick for Ben and for all the good Kiwanis does; Jeanne for a great story-telling trip to KC; Vern for the sunny days recently; Ed for his birthday; and Gerry for a cruise to Europe coming up. Trivia Night Planning Session October 14, 2009 12 members and 1 guest present: Dave Alspaugh, friend of Marshall and prospective member. Judy reports that the Kiwanis Camp Wyman Board met and will hold a work day at the camp on April 10 and is asking local clubs to help clean up the camp and get it ready for the summer camping schedule as their “Kiwanis One Day” project. Our club will participate in this project. Marshall attended the recent TAG meeting, and reports that the Membership Committee met and has some ideas. Mary will be attending the Circle K Board Meeting this weekend. Then, after passing around communications, Louann took over for our Trivia Night Planning Session. Without going into great detail, Louann presented the plans and all agreed to do the same jobs they have been doing over the years. Steve will look into the cost of insurance, and otherwise all is being taken care of. Our final planning session will be January 13, and our evaluation meeting will be Feb 10. Happy $$$: Marshall for Dave accompanying him today; Ed & Vern for the fine Anniversary Dinner last week; Dave for visiting us today; Rick for the HOG ride to the Smoky Mountains; Mary for her birthday; Sue for her boys both getting excellent report cards; Gerry for her great family; Carla for a great weekend; Steve for an upcoming family vacation; Louann for her 50th high school reunion.

Bob Svoboda received the Kiwanian of the Year Award, his 35-year perfect attendance pin, and Judy presented Bob with a Com-memorative Brick that will be placed at Beaumont Scout Ranch in Bob’s Honor from our Club. 50/50: Drawing – Joanna Finch.
