Is 61:1The Spirit of the Lord is upon me... 4.they shall rebuild the old ruins..they shall repair the ruined cities.....

The year 1887 - the year Mound Bayou, Mississippi was founded marked a turn in the aspirations of the plight of the African American slave and former slave population in the United States. The founders of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, Isaiah T. Montgomery and his cousin Benjamin T. Green had not only dreamed as slaves, of freedom to express the great talents and gifts God had given to the African race but had finally brought that dream into reality. By 1909, the dream yielded a city that led the world in cotton production and other agriculture and manufacturing ventures. Mound Bayou became the symbol of black achievement full of pride of a people that vowed to rely on God in all that they did. Because of the early racist and financial enemies of the movement, the city’s “life in the limelight” was short lived and until this day the city has suffered many set backs. Mound Bayou now holds the unique distinction as the oldest black city in the United States. It was the vision of the founders and the dream of the slave, Benjamin Montgomery, father of founder Isaiah T. Montgomery to have a flagship community for black America. Because of the intent of the founders, and as a leader in this community I am announcing the revitalization of this area of the Mississippi Delta as it becomes a blessing to the entire world. The dream that was birth in the heart of slaves will now be continued by our faith in God. Thanks for your involvement in this mighty move of God.

A city "Where GOD and LIBERTY dwells"

THEODORE ROOSEVELT CALLED IT "THE JEWEL OF THE DELTA"

For years, many citizen from the Mississippi Delta have contributed to a multi- billion dollar empire in inventions, music and other, yet the state of Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the country. The movement seeks to reverse these statistics by empowering and mentoring the movers and shakers of the great Mississippi Delta and utilizing the city of Mound Bayou and it's history of self government and African American success.

Key people and organizations have come together to support a city-wide redevelopment program comprised of humanitarian projects. With recommendations that the city become a premier tourist area and oasis, the Mound Bayou Movement uses a promise in Isaiah 61 as an inspiration and guide. The founders of Mound Bayou believed that the Village they founded would prove and display to the world of the great gifts and talents that the black man would contribute to this great United States and world. With prayer and the faith of God, the Mound Bayou Movement "is on."
