SHENANIGAN'S PARADE WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!
Despite the new route, the crowds turned out in downtown Gulfport on March 19th. Look on the Shenanigan's website for more details. The after parade party was held at the Deaf Center. Thanks again to our gracious Grand Marshal, General Joe Spraggins and our lovely Colleen, Carrie Duncan!

SOCKS N. POCKET PROGRAM IS BACK IN FULL SWING!Thanks to the help of the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, we are scheduled to read to the children of Beauvoir Elementary, Central Elementary and West Elementary. Our first visit to Beauvoir was a real hoot! We estimate well over 100 children! They love the new addition of Sign Language to the reading program. "Socks" reads the stories, and her sidekick "Pockets" signs them. The children mimic the signs. Afterwards, we have an activity, where the children make paper sock puppets out of various papers (provided by Lynn Meadows Discovery Center). See some photos of the Beauvoir visit, by clicking on the item shown left.

SHOEBOXES OF LOVE - A NATIONWIDE QI CHRISTMAS PROJECT FOR THE CHILDREN OF KATRINA-RAVAGED MS GULF COAST
See a photo diary of this project clicking on the photo album (see left)
Over 500 gift wrapped "Shoeboxes of Love" were shipped here from Quotarians all across the United States. Adopted as a national service project, this wonderful program brought gift wrapped presents to the children of the hurricane-ravaged Mississippi Gulf Coast. A party was held on Christmas Eve morning in Bay St. Louis for 400 children, complete with "Jingles" and Santa Claus, handing out the gifts! Entertainment was provided by "Tribute". City Team Ministries helped us with hot cocoa and cookies. City Team Ministries informs us that an additional 625 families have returned to their destroyed homes this week. Besides the wonderful gifts supplied by Quotarians from all across the US (see list below), we donated 6 cases of stuffed animals, Christmas stickers, bookbags, blankets and baby items that have been given to us from various groups. "Disney on Ice" donated character mugs; Nunes & Associates in California sent 5 cases of bookbags, books, stickers; and we were able to collect 7 huge cases of stuffed animals from donations sent to the MS Coast Coliseum (where Paula & Vicki work) The excited faces of the children made it all worthwhile, but the grateful hugs and tears from the parents were heartwarming!

THANK YOU QUOTARIANS FOR YOUR SHOEBOXES OF LOVE (If you don't see your club, it's because your boxes arrived unmarked. We tried to keep records, but some were hard to tell. We THANK YOU ALL!)

St. Mark's Children celebrate Christmas thanks to Quotarians
See photos of the costumes by clicking on the album left
Thanks to the overwhelming generousity of Quotarians who donated fabric at the South Area Meeting in October, Vicki was able to fulfill a dream for the children of St. Mark's Church in Gulfport. Their annual Christmas program (held for 20 years at the church) was threatened to be cancelled, because the costumes were destroyed (along with the church). Quotarians from Memphis, TN, Coral Springs, FL, Magnolia, AR, Valdosta, GA, Jackson, MS, Atlanta, GA, Bossier City, LA and Monroe, LA donated six 30-gallon bags of exquisite fabrics, notions and thread. The Festival was held as planned, December 18th in the Anniston Elementary School Cafeteria in Gulfport. The children said it was the best ever! HURRICANE KATRINA QI RELIEF DOLLARS HELPING THE MS GULF COAST

$5,000 in Linens, TTY Machines and Food were presented to Deaf Center

The deLepee Deaf Center was one of the few buildings not damaged by Katrina's fury, but they have deplenished their food and linens, because they opened their hearts (and cupboards) to many that were devastated. QI, MGC received over $5,000 to purchase linens for 8 displaced families with deaf members, along with 6 TTY machines, and enough groceries to fill the Center's pantries once again.(see photos below)

WOMEN'S CENTER RECEIVES GRANT MONEY
Quota International Office notified our chapter that the grant of $5,000 has been granted to assist in the rebuilding and recovery of the Women's Center for Non-violence. Although their building did not suffer direct damage, their many important programs have suffered due to budget cuts. Their airconditioning also broke after the storm, which cost the center $24,000. We are so grateful to Quotarians worldwide, in their generosity!

All Boys & Girls Clubs were Destroyed by Katrina. This one is on Crawford St.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS RECEIVE $5,000 GRANT FROM QI RELIEF FUNDS
Thanks to the generosity of Quotarians, Boys & Girls clubs on the MS Gulf Coast will soon be "back in business". A $5,000 check was presented at their Gulf Coast meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 1st. (photo to come)

412 Blankets were Distributed to Families in Bay St. Louis

HURRICANE "TENT FAMILIES" RECEIVE BLANKETS FROM QUOTA
Bed, Bath & Beyond has been our partners in procuring 415 blankets for the upcoming winter months. Their District Manager, Kevin Macaluso, went out of his way to locate and have them delivered to the Gulfport store (with no extra shipping charges to us!) Thanks to a grant from Quota International's Hurricane Relief Fund, MS Gulf Coast purchased the blankets, and personally delivered them to needy families currently living in tents in Bay St. Louis. They were distributed with the help of City Team Ministries, who are organizing the distribution center in the Bay. We visited the Hope Theatre, and handed out the blankets to adults and children alike. In addition, Quotarians from the East Area shipped handmade baby blankets. God Bless Quotarians!

SPIDERMAN VISITS THE MS GULF COAST THANKS TO QUOTA!

Spidey's web shooter says "I Love You"

“Even Super Heroes can’t be everywhere. That’s why I need your help,” was the message that Spider-Man brought to nearly 500 Gulf Coast children this weekend. In three special appearances, arranged by Marvel Characters Appearance Program Company , the webbed crimefighter visited the temporary home of the Boys & Girls Clubs in Popps Ferry Elementary, then swooped over to surprise families at the free food and supplies distrubtion center in D'Iberville, then it was on to see shoppers at the D’Iberville Walmart, finally landing at the Hope Theatre in Bay St. Louis.

Coordinated by the MS Gulf Coast Chapter of Quota International, Spider-Man visited each child individually, telling them they were all “Super Heroes”. He posed for pictures, then gave them an autographed collector’s hologram card – a souvenir reserved for only special fans of the webbed super hero.

“We can’t thank Marvel and Rob Grosser, President of Marvel Characters Appearance Program Company enough,” said Quota Lt. Governor, Vicki Miller of Gulfport. “Our children have been through so much, and it was so generous of them to send their most popular super hero to lift their spirits”.
