9-1-1 DISPATCHER TRAINEE (Full-Time)
Communication Center
City of Billings

This is a training position that will, upon successful completion of the approximately 16-week training period, lead to positions as both an emergency Call Taker and Dispatcher. Examples of daily work duties include receipt of emergency telephone calls; prioritization of emergency telephone calls; preparation and entry of official public safety reports in a Computer Aided Dispatch system; entry and retrieval of data from the Criminal Justice Information Network and the National Crime Information Center; radio procedure and operation in accordance with FCC regulations. The applicant must be able to think clearly in emergency situations; must have a clear, distinct voice to transmit information; must be able to sit for long periods of time; must be available for shift work; and must maintain a home phone. The Billings City-County Communication Center is a 24-hour a day operation; as a result, hours and days of work will vary.

Requirements: High school diploma or GED; must be able to type 40 WPM without error; must be able to perform accurate alpha numeric data entry at 97 keystrokes per minute; must successfully pass pre-employment testing. An extensive criminal history background check is done on all applicants; pre-employment drug screening is required; remaining drug free is a condition of employment.

Starting Salary: $10.81 per hour plus benefits. Upon successful completion of the training program, hourly wage increases to $12.77. Current hourly wage tops out at $20.27 per hour.

Important Information: Applicants are required to submit a City of Billings application, resume, cover letter, proof of typing and proof of alpha numeric data entry to the City of Billings Human Resources Division, 210 N. 27th Street, Billings, MT 59101 or online at www.ci.billings.mt.us. Job Service administers typing and data entry testing; arrangements can be made by contacting their office at 652-3080 (minimum acceptable cutoffs are 40 WPM for typing and 5700 KPH for data entry). It remains incumbent upon applicants to provide the necessary resume, cover letter, proof of typing and proof of data entry prior to being scheduled for pre-employment testing. Once application materials have been submitted, applicants can contact Supervisor Diane Guy, 657-8200, to schedule testing.
