Welcome!

The First Regiment Kentucky Vols, Co E CSA, the Alexander Guards is a close knit unit composed of men, women and children who share mutual respect and a love of the War Between the States history. We have members from NC, VA, MD and MI.

The companies of the original First Kentucky were the first from that state to rush to arms for the South.

Dedicated to the preservation of history, the 1st Kentucky strives to accurately portray the Kentucky Confederate soldier. Family oriented, we strongly believe that history can and should be enjoyed by all and we readily accept families and encourage their participation. We do reenactments living histories and school presentations. Most events we attend are in Virginia and North Carolina.

We are a proud member Longstreets Corps. If you are interested in learning more about us and reenacting please use the contact form at the bottom of the page. Someone will contact you and answer your questions.

Battleflag Conservation Effort

Company E's Original Battleflag

In April of 1861, near Moscow Kentucky, a group of men stood in reverence while Miss Nannie Wison presented them a symbol of admiration and love, their battle flag. She mentioned that their company, the Alexander Guards, was named for a famous Kentuckian Major R.B. Alexander, hero of the Mexican War. They knew they would have to live up to their heritage as Kentuckians and their company's namesake.

Those men soon boarded trains that would take thm across miles of track through Tennessee and Virginia. Each station along the way offering cheers, food and encouragement. All the while carrying their banner a symbol of their devotion and all they loved and held dear. >

Orphaned by their own state government, it would be a long and difficult year. A year that would take them from Harper's Ferry, through Winchester, Manassas, Dranesville, Mason's Hill and the opening shots of the Peninsula Campaign. As winter came, with loved ones so far away, these men united under their beloved banner. Its fabric bound them together as a company and to a state they passionately loved. When the unit was mustered out at Camp Winder, near Richmond, VA, many of their number were missing, having paid the supreme sacrifice and would never see their homes again.

This flag was donated to the Museum of the Confederacy in 1907, by the window of the last company commander, Capt C.L. Randle.

Without available funds for conservation, it has remained stored in the museum's flag collection.

In 2007, the current day reenactor organization, 1st Regiment Kentucky Volunteers, Company E raised enough funds to have the conservation cost estimated. To restore this flag will cost $22,000.00. Your contribution, no matter how big or small will help preserve this banner and the memory of those who fought and died under it.
