"Wealthy?"

Read Luke 18:18-30

How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!

Luke 18:24 (NRSV)

I heard a story about a man whose will dictated that travelers checks be placed with him in his coffin. I chuckled at this attempt to counter the saying, "You can't take it with you." Still, I've also always struggled to comprehend Jesus' comment about the wealthy. While certainly not a rich person by most people's definition, I possess many things that Jesus would surely view as extravagant. Even beyond that, it would seem irresponsible to give away all of my material possessions. When I'm old and retired, my wife and I don't want to burden our children with the financial hardship of trying to support us.

In some ways, I think a lot of people feel doomed by this passage. Yet when I look at it in the context of the entire chapter, I understand that it does not say we have to be penniless to enter heaven. The passage is about whether we love wealth and possessions more than we love the Lord. We are expected to help those in need while also providing for our own needs. How do we find this balance? Through faith and reading scripture, we can remember to rely on Christ, whose guidance remains sound.

Andrew C. Billings (South Carolina, U.S.A.)

PRAYER

Dear Lord, teach us the value of sharing what we have with others. Help us to know that life's true rewards cannot be bought and are not found in this earthly life. Amen.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

How can I more faithfully share my wealth with those in need?

PRAYER FOCUS

People captive to possessions

"Climbing the Sycamore Tree"

Based on the story of Zacchaeus (Luke 19: 1-9), CLIMBING THE SYCAMORE TREE is a six week study on economic faithfulness. It provides clear biblical insight and current information to show how our buying habits often marginalize certain people and perpetuate systems that contradict good stewardship and love for God's creation. Following the experience of Zacchaeus, this group study written by Ann Hagmann seeks to deepen the link between the faith we profess and the lifestyle we live. Each week's reading consist of five lessons and material for a group session.

History of Black Creek UMC

Original Black Creek UMC

The Black Creek Methodist Church, organized in 1873, met first in a school building owned by Dr. Stephen Woodard. It was called The Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. A sanctuary was built in 1875 of lumber given by John and Rachel Bardin. Trustees were Ephraim McNair and David Lee. Bett Joyner some years later donated money for the steeple.

The new brick church, begun in 1948, was completed during Reverend W.E.Howard’s ministry, and he preached the first sermon in January 1950. The land on which this building stands was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. P.L. Woodard in 1938. The structure cost $27,000.00. The building was one and one-half stories. In the basement were located a kitchen, an assembly area, a bath, and three enclosed Sunday school rooms. In the rear of the basement a furnace room and cooling system were located.

The dedication service May 4, 1952, was well attended. Bishop W.W. Peele of Richmond preached the dedication sermon. The beautiful pulpit furniture was given in memory of Mr. F.E. Howard by his family. Mrs. Howard, a valued community leader and principal of the Black Creek School, had served twenty-five years as superintendent of the Sunday school. The communion table was given by Albert Bass and his family.

A gift of land adjacent to the church by Mrs. James Blount of Wilson made possible the Sunday school, pastor-study annex. Work on this educational building was begun in 1969 under the ministry of Reverend Angus M. Cameron. The building Committee was: J. Sid Tomlinson, chairman, Roy Campbell, Ruth Campbell, Faye Evans, Dr. A.J. Smith,William P. Smith, and W.H. Tomlinson.

The building was consecrated on November 30, 1969, during the ministry of Reverend Julian W. Scott. A memorial service was held April 8, 1973, on the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the church. One of the oldest church organizations in the Black Creek community was the Methodist Woman’s Missionary Society or Woman’s Society of Christian Service as it was called. Mrs. E.B. Blount of Wilson, the district Secretary, officiated at the organization of the group. She presented a charter to the nine members. Mrs. F.E. Howard was the president; Mrs. N.B. Aycock, vice president; Mrs. A.J. Smith, secretary Mrs. L.D. Tomlinson, treasurer. Others members were: Mrs. Elisha Bass, Mrs. Sallie Poole, Mrs. W.B. Lanstooth, Mrs. W.A. Barnes, and Mrs. Glenn Evans. Elizabeth (Betty) Bass, then a student at Scarrett College, was an inspiration to the group. Born in Black Creek and reared in The Methodist Orphanage at Raleigh she had in maturity served as a missionary to Africa.

By January 10, 1950, the membership of the Woman’s Society had increased to twenty-five. A Junior Missionary Society, called the Epworth League, was organized in 1926.Some of the members were: Clara Bass, Beatrice Tomlinson, Irene Paschall, Collins Yelverton, Nannie Yelverton and Mildred Barnes. The group leader was an enthusiastic, dedicated Christian couple, Mr. and Mrs. Dougal Newton. They formed an active Christian fellowship of great benefit to these young people who had little opportunity for social gatherings other than those of the school and church. The group grew to a membership of thirty.

Something to think about

This is the beginning of the new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is important, because I'm exchanging a day of my life for it. When tommorrow comes this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something that I have traded for it. I want it to be gain, not loss; good not evil; success, not failure; in order that I shall not regret the price I paid for it.
