WELCOME

This is the official site of The Foothill Jazzy Belles, a chapter of The Red Hat Society. We are located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Our Chapter was "disorganized" at the end of June, 2004. We are having a fantastic time playing "dress-up" and having fun together. We are over the initial shock of going out in public in our finery and now look forward to these opportunities. The RHS is helping us to "step out of the box" and add more laughter and silliness to our lives. The friendship, fellowship, and fun that we share within our chapter is wonderful. We are also forging ahead and joining other chapters in trips, etc. The "belles" are fun loving and sweet spirited!

How It All Started

After reading the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph, Sue Ellen Cooper decided to give a friend a birthday gift of a vintage red hat purchased at a thrift shop, along with a copy of the poem. Her friend enjoyed the gift so much that Sue Ellen began giving this same gift to friend after friend, thus becoming a sort of "Red Hat Society". They decided to find purple dresses which didn't go with their red hats to complete the image of the poem. They began going out to "tea" in full regalia. This was the birth of the Red Hat Society.

Our Purpose:

The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and, since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO!!! What a Ride!"
