Johnny(Middle) and Tim(Left)    Johnny Depp began working with director Tim Burton in the movie Ed Wood. The movie began a long relationship between the two and would continue through such films as Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and coming soon in 2005, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Tim himself is prided on being a very artistic director displaying his magnificent imagination on sets such as Sleepy Hollow, where the setting was the turn of the 19th century. More famously though, his artistic ability was shown in The Nightmare Before Christmas, which came to be a cult classic. Together these amazing men have put forth eye-opening entertainment and have caused a different onset of the human imagination.

Burton Sweet on "Wonka" Remake

It looks like Tim Burton is ready to channel his inner Oompa Loompa. The weird-embracing director behind The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice and Batman has received the golden ticket from Warner Bros. to helm Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a big-screen adaptation of the beloved Roald Dahl children's book. This will mark the second time the whimsical inhabitants of a magical candy factory will come to life on film. In 1971, Gene Wilder headlined Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, a movie that has become a cult classic and spawned the hit song "Candy Man." The new adaptation has been a long time coming. Warner Bros. started kicking around the idea of a Wonka redo in 1991, but it didn't snag the rights until 1998. Apparently, Dahl detested the first film, and his family members dragged their feet on approving the second following his death in 1990. Daily Variety reports that the estate gave the final go-ahead after learning the studio's choice of director. Burton, whose eccentric creative vision dovetails with Dahl's, also produced 1996's version of the author's James and the Giant Peach. It appears the Burton deal is as good as done. (The director's reps have yet to make an official announcement, but everyone involved swears it's a sure thing.) Burton is heading to London in the coming days for a final tete-a-tete with the Dahl family. Burton's Chocolate deal is part of a two-film gig with Warner Bros. Before his gets his candyman on, he will oversee a stop-motion animation feature called The Corpse Bride. Then it will be full-steam ahead to Wonka world, with production expected to begin in 2004. Studio execs are keeping their fingers crossed--they're hoping the new Wonka will launch a successful franchise (see Burton's Warners-backed Batman) that could even spin off into a Broadway musical. The long-term projections may be a bit optimistic considering Burton's checkered résumé, particularly in terms of remakes. Last year's big-budget Planet of the Apes failed to wow critics and did monkey business at the box office. Burton's next big-screen effort, Big Fish, starring Ewan McGregor and Jessica Lange, bows in theaters later this year. Written by: Julie Keller on E-online

hey it could work?

The Libertine (2004)

Johnny Depp as John Wilmot

The Libertine is directed by Laurence Dunmore and portrays Johnny Depp as John Wilmot, a. k. a. the Earl of Rochester, a 17th century poet who famously drank and debauched his way to an early grave -- succumbing to syphilis at the age of 33 -- only to earn posthumous critical acclaim for his life's work.

  The Rum Diary (September 2005)

Benicio Del Toro, Hunter S. Tompson and Johnny Depp

Benicio Del Toro is directing a sequal to the 1997 film "Fear and Loathing in Las Vagas." It will star him, Josh Hartnett, and Johnny Depp. Begun in 1959 by a then-twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary is a brilliantly tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust in the Caribbean boomtown that was San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the late 1950s.

News: Violet & Veruca Cast in Burton's Chocolate Factory Source: Robert Tuesday, June 1, 2004
'Robert' alerted us that the parts of Violet and Veruca have been cast for director Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which stars Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket. Annasophia Robb will take on the part of Violet Beauregarde and newcomer Julia Winter will take on Veruca Salt. Annasophia will be seen in the upcoming Because of Winn-Dixie, which is due out in January, 2005. This will be Julia Winter's first film. Julia's character, Veruca had to act out scenes with potential actors for the role of Mike Teevee. The parts of Mike Teevee and Augustus Gloop are yet to be decided. In the Warner Bros. adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, five golden tickets are hidden beneath the wrappers of Mr. Willy Wonka's delicious chocolate bars - five golden tickets which will change the lives of those who find them. The winning children are invited through the gates of Mr. Wonka's Chocolate Factory to see all the secrets and magic inside and to meet Mr. Wonka and his staff of Oompa-Loompas. For Charlie Bucket, a poor boy living within sight of the factory, winning the fifth and final golden ticket is just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.
