Hobbie Horse Prayer

I would like to talk to you little bit about prayer. Now I know what some of you are thinking. You’re probably saying to yourself, "Prayer, there’s a thousand books on that subject and he wants to write another one." And it’s true, there are many books on this subject, but friends, that is what God put on my heart and I must obey! I am not writing something I learned from a book, I am writing things I learned by spending time with God!

First off, does your prayer time resemble a sprint or a marathon? In other words, do you see how fast you can pronounce the benediction in order to move on to the more busier parts of your day? Or maybe your prayer time is like you are phibustering the Senate, you just go on and on spending a lot of time, but not really amounting to much, other then taking up time. Then there are, what I like to call, the highly theological prayers where we try to get real spiritual. You know what I mean, when we try to use all the spiritual language we know or have ever heard. Well friends, I’m sorry to say this kind of praying does not impress God either. Why? Because He already knows what’s in your heart, so you might as well be real with Him.

I titled this article "Hobby Horse Prayer" for a reason. When I was little my parents bought me a black and white hobbyhorse that was attached by springs to a stand. I’m sure some of you may have seen them or you may have had one yourself. (Just as a side note here let me say that now I have the real thing, a real live horse. So if you don’t want your children to ride horses when they get older, I suggest you keep them away from hobbyhorses when they’re little, if you know what I mean.) Now back to the title. You see I loved that little horse and also loved to ride him. So every afternoon after school and a lot on the weekends, I would mount up and go riding. I would ride slow, I would ride at a trot or what I thought was a trot and I would ride at a full gallop, especially when the Indians were after me. I would ride ‘til I couldn’t ride any more or till my mother said she had heard enough beating, banging and hollering for one night. Then I would dismount, take off my hat and boots and kiss my horse goodnight, (don’t laugh, you’ve kissed some crazy things in your life, that you’ve loved too!) and off I went to bed.

As I was thinking about this article I thought about that little horse, from long ago. And I thought, you know, I rode that horse ‘til I was literally wore out and when I got off I was at the exact same spot that I started. All that work and I hadn’t moved an inch.

Friends the Bible declares Ephesians 6:18, "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit." It also declares in Romans 8:26, "Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities, for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." From these two verses we see that true prayer, the kind that reaches the ears of God, can only be done in the spirit. We can’t want it up, will it up nor can we wish it up. In other words, like that little horse, we can work all we want to, but it takes the Spirit praying through us to get anywhere with our prayers. Why? Verse 27 of that same chapter tells us. It reads, "And he (God) that searcheth the hearts knows what is in the mind of the Spirit, because he (the Spirit) maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God." So you see it takes the Spirit praying, because he knows what the perfect will of God is for your life and that’s what we all want if we are true Christians.

So the next time you stand before God praying, wait and give the Spirit time to speak to your heart. If you’re like me you will be surprised at what comes out of your lips, because it will be Him praying and not you. He will pray and also praise through you, because He knows the mind of the Father and will only do or say what He knows is necessary to bring about the perfect will of the Father in your life. In other words, the Spirit will make good and full use of your prayer time. All you have to do is listen for His voice with your heart.

My friends when you learn to pray this way, your prayers will be answered and you will never again waste your time praying Hobby Horse Prayers.
