"We Believe Everyone Has A Right to be Heard"

New Hanover County National Organization for Women is fighting for equality in jobs, pay, credit, insurance, pensions, fringe benefits, and Social Security--through legislation, negotiation, labor organizing, education, and litigation.

New Hanover County National Organization for Women condemns the racism which inflicts a double burden of race and sex discrimination on women of color. Seeing human rights as indivisible, we are committed to identifying and fighting against those barriers to equality and justice that are imposed by racism.

New Hanover County National Organization for Women challenges and acts to change the image of women as victims, which leaves them vulnerable to sexual assault and spouse abuse. We have pioneered model rape and spouse assault legislation as well as support programs for battered women, and have promoted self-defense programs for women.

Presently, New Hanover County National Organization for Women is forming a Disability Rights Task Force to include consumers of the mental health and developmental disabilites services in the local area. Special Education Teachers, Social workers, psychologists and other interested parties are welcome to join. Please email us for more information: makingwavesnow@yahoo.com.

Sex for Sale..................

The Wilmington Morning Star did an article on prostitution which was placed above the fold on the front page on Sunday (highest readership) Feb. 17, 2002. Included on the front page was a full face photo of a female prostitute. The man beside her (john/male prostitute?) has his face turned away.

What did you think of the article? Email us your thoughts.

At the Wilmington Morning Star:

I find it interesting that the photo on the front page was a female prostitute, not a male john. Perhaps the male john wouldn't sell as many papers. Again, let's just exploit the women for money/sex, others are doing it, too.

Commonly, male and female prostitutes are survivors of sexual trauma in childhood perpetuated by an adult male family member or close friend of the family. The child who is unsupported by therapy or good parenting will grow up to self-medicate by using illegal drugs.

Until we see drug abuse for what it is: A HEALTH ISSUE (not simply a criminal issue), we will not properly deal with all of the following societal problems which are closely related: child abuse/neglect/sexual exploitation, HIV and AIDS, domestic violence, homelessness, mental illness, and prostitution.

"Just Say No," "Three Strikes and You're Out," do not work. Not only are these morally indefensible, they are not economically feasible.

Instead, we must provide free, community based drug rehabilitation in programs that are longer than simply 30 days. For instance, crack users need at least a year of residential treatment and monitoring after the initial 30 day in hospital treatment setting. Because crack is a drug of choice for lower economic classes, we do not fund enough of such programs. Besides, if we have all of these women off crack, who could we prostitute? God Forbid women sober up and demand their rights!

LET'S DO SOMETHING WORTHWHILE WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS...NOT TO MENTION OUR SOULS...

An Open Letter to the Mayor:

Mayor Harper Peterson,

As a business owner and resident of down town Wilmington, I feel sure you have been exposed to the city's need for a progressive response to the prostitution and drug problems.

Please review the website we found for the city of St. Paul (see the first link to the left) and specifically the arrest photos of the pimps, johns and madams who had been arrested (but some not convicted). Can we open any dialogue with the city of St. Paul to analyse the response to the arrest photos?

Furthermore, what do you perceive the city's role in funding a long term community based residential treatment program for crack addicts?
