These components apply to the Centers At Work and Neighborhood Centers. However, because Umbrella Centers operate at the complete discretion of the student and family residing in the home, they may or may not have all of the following components:

1. Natural Learning which is also known as Unschooling;

2. Technology use-internet, laptops, PDAs, digital cameras and videos, webcams;

3. Student directed inquiry;

4. Integration across subjects;

5. Focused Arts Integration especially in younger learners;

6. Looped or Continually Looped (same teachers throughout several years or all of child's education);

7. Mixed Ages for many projects; Individual and Team Projects;

8. Nurturing Home Atmosphere whether location is in home or work setting;

9. Naturally accelerated with curriculum compacting;

10. Year round available with vacation-travel options for traditonal schedules;

11. Portfolios including photographs (documenting progress);

12. Notebooks, Journals, Web Quests, Reports, Unit Studies, Projects & Research papers (documenting knowledge);

13. Public speaking/theatre in a developmentally appropriate manner (readiness for dissertation & leadership);

14. Democratic Team Efforts (students have meetings to discuss program of study for team efforts and each student has 1 vote; mentor(s) are tie breaker. This is not to construe a particular polical party.);

15. Individualized Programs of Study for self directed learning (students and their family choose their own program of study based upon students learning style, talents and preferences as the family deems appropriate);

16. Field trips (real and virtual);

17. Private web cam access to public student areas (parents can log on with their code and see their child and read notes and emails; parents have constant access to and control of the educational process);

18. Notebook computers, PDAs, etc.;

19. Typical Daily Schedule/Hours of operation

Morning Enrichment: from 7 am to 9 am

TeamWork: from 9 am - 12 noon

Lunch: from 12 noon - 2 pm (kids cook & clean!!)

Individual Studies: from 2 pm - 6 pm

20. There are no letter grades. The students who grasp the assignment will document their progress via portfolios, projects and reports. These students receive a Certificate of Achievement upon completing each year. If a student needs review or remediation, this will be done before the Certificate is issued.

21. There is no focus on individual grade level. Each student is allowed to excel in particular subjects; therefore each student may be operating at different grade levels in each subject. We do not emphasize grade labeling due to the confining nature of such labels.

22. Traveling with family is given priority and serves as a basis for research and life experience.

23. Life experience is part of the educational process (documented with diaries and journals).

24. Nonpartisan; that is, without a political party adherance. Politics is a subject for inquiry without a mandatory adherance to a particular political party for the purpose of attending the school program.

25. Nonreligious; that is, without religious adherance. Relgion is a subject for inquiry without mandatory adherance to a particular religion for the purpose of attending the school program.
