Lea Johnson…born 9/2/1931..Hermiston, Oregon
Born in a
little town in northern Oregon not far from the Columbia River which separates
Oregon and Washington. Married young and NOTE first of 5 children was born 14
months later. Of the 5 children, Diana
is a retired accountant, Gerry retired from Microsoft, Terri Lee is assistant
to Finance Director at the Flamingo in Las Vegas, John is President of Carroll
Shelby Mustang/Cobra International & Christina has the new bakery in
York. WE have 24 grandchildren, 15 great
grandchildren, and 3 great, great grand- children. Had 3 sisters
& 2 brothers. I am the oldest of 6.
Have lost 2 sisters, one with polio, and one with MS. One brother lives in OK. And a brother and
sister in Oregon. First job was
as a “number please” telephone operator but as my husband moved on and I was
alone with 2 children to take care of, I lived for a time with my parents and
worked at an Army Ordnance Deport as a short box checker. Remarried a police
officer and again moved. This time to a
college town in the Blue Mountains of Oregon.
In La Grande, Oregon I probably had my most interesting job. I was a Program Director in a Radio Station.
I scheduled daily programs, helped with announcements and had a 30 minute
woman’s program. When my husband decided
to return to the Navy we were stationed in Alameda, California where I worked
for a termite control office. Then my
husband was transferred to MiraMar Naval Air Station, north of San Diego, California. Here I go again, looking for another
job. I worked for A brokerage firm until
my last daughter was born. In fact I was
working for this firm when President Kennedy was shot and the stock market went
wild. A year after
the last daughter was born I went through a life changing time. Basically losing 6 months to cancer
surgeries. I realized how short life could be so decided to go back to night
school. At this time I had also decided
to try working for a school district.
Starting at the bottom as a dish washer I soon took the bakers position
when open and then on to manager of a single kitchen. They then transferred me to the High School
as manager where we were a prep kitchen for 3 additional schools. After ten years at the district, night
school, one daughter still at home, and a failed marriage I applied for a
position as Area Supervisor at another school district where I had 9 schools I
was responsible for. We also did the meal for the Senior Center. It was a great move because I did meet and
married my present husband Jerry, thirty years ago. We retired
and moved to York, NE in 1991 where we spent about 12 years going to Az. in the
winter to do a lot of Square Dancing, and then moved to Fairmont in 2009. Love Nebraska and would never move. I did
receive my degree from Palomar College Was a 25
year member of the California State Grange Held
position of Secretary of San Marcos Grange for 9 years Was Woman’s
Committee Chairman for Grange for 8 years Belonged to
the California Food Service President of
local County Food Service Assoc. for 6 years Belong to

Club’s Outstanding Member for November Louise Gipson has been named
“Member of the Month” for November by the GFWC Fairmont Woman’s Club. Louise has been an active member of the club
for 11 years. Her biography was read as
the club’s November meeting and she received a certificate for the years o
service. Her biography follows. I was born in Wichita Kansas January 5th 1926, and was named
Cora Louise after my mother; I have a brother Marvin that is 6 years older. At the age of three my
parents were divorced, and my mother took us to Rock Spring, Arkansas to be
close to her parents. Rock Springs was
a small settlement of people which had one building that served as both Church
and school house. Marvin and I lived with
our grandparents, and Mother went to work in Lincoln the nearest town. Since
she didn’t have transportation she only came home on weekends. While working in
Lincoln, she met a bachelor named Frank Jackson. He would come out to Rock
Springs on Sunday, and I remember he always had candy and gum in his suit
pocket. We could reach in and get it,
and it never failed to be there. That was a big treat for us. After Mother and Frank
were married we moved to Lincoln, where he had a garage and gas station. It was
so good to be in a family unit with a mother and dad that loved you, and we
never doubted Dad’s love. Marvin and I went by the name of Jackson all our
growing up years. When Marvin graduated
from high school he had to use our biological name. When I was 16 and went to
apply for a social security card I had to start using it too. In our hearts
were were always Jackson’s. I started to school in
Lincoln, but when I was in the 3rd grade we moved back to Rock
Springs where Dad and his brother owned a farm. Marvin and I loved the farm,
but not the two mile walk to school in the winter time. During the summer we
would walk the 5 miles to Lincoln where Mom would buy groceries and visit, and
Marvin and I were turned loose to enjoy
being in town and going to the show. After Dad closed the garage we would ride
home with him. We moved back to town
when I was in the 8th grade. It was wonderful to have electric
lights. On the farm we had a coleman light to study by. We were in seventh heaven to have lights and
ice box and heat that we didn’t have to carry wood! I was a junior when
Pearl Harbor happened, and soon after Dad wasn’t able to get parts/tires and
gas for the garage, so he closed it and went on Civil Service. That was a government job and he was sent to
Salina Kansas where they were building a large airbase. In May of 1942 we left
Arkansas. I went to Wichita to stay with my Aunt. My Brother enlisted in the Navy, and Mom and
Dad were in Salina. I went to Cathedral High for my senior year and graduated
in June 1943. I worked at the Kress Dime
Store during the summer, after school and on week-ends. I met Ralph Gipson from
Missouri in the summer of 1942. He had
come to Wichita to find work, and was working at Beechcraft. We started dating
and dated all through my senior year. We were engaged just before graduation.
In June Ralph quit his job at Beechcrafts, and joined the Navy. He felt it was
something he had to do. When he left I went to
York where my parents were living. Dad had been transferred to Fairmont,
Nebraska where they were building the airbase.
I got a job and was working for Safeway in York. After boot camp in
Farragut Idaho, Ralph came to York on leave. He was on his way to Seattle
Washington for electrician’s school at Lake Union. The middle of December Ralph
called and wanted me to come to Seattle and get married. After some thought,
and permission from my parents I took the forty five silver dollars I had been saving
and bought a train ticket! It took me four days to arrive in Seattle due to being snow bound in
Billings Montana for several hours. At 17 I wasn’t too brave! In Seattle Lola
Jameson the wife of Ralph Jameson, Ralph’s Navy buddy had a room rented for me
in the house where she was staying. She
was already making the plans for our wedding.
We became instant friends, and remained together until Ralph and Jameson
left. We were married Saturday evening, December 25th, 1943 in the
living room of Mrs. Lewis our landlady. Our guests were a Navy buddy from the
base, an older lady, and two young girls that also lived in the rooming house.
Jameson and Lola was our attendant’s. Then we had a wedding feast that Lola and
I had prepared in Mrs. Lewis kitchen and dining room. She wanted us to use her
best china and silver. Her warmth and generosity made our wedding special. On Monday the 27th
I applied for a job at Boeing Aircraft, and started work on Tuesday. Lola and I
both worked there. After Ralph and Jameson finished school they were assigned
to the U. S. Richmond that was in Bremmerton.
In May just before the ship was to leave for overseas duty, Lola and I
returned home—she to Troy Illinois and me to York. And we were both expecting
our 1st baby! I lived with my parents
until Ralph got out of service in the last of November 1945. Linda Louise was born February 6, 1945, and
she was 11 months old when she and her daddy finally saw each other. September
30th, 1946 Lois Leona joined her sister Linda, and our lives were
complete. In 1950 Ralph went to
work for Consumers Public Power (now NPPD) and in 1955 he was transferred to
Clay Center—and then to Exeter in 1957.
I went to work at First National Bank. Then in 1960 he was sent to
Geneva. I continued to work at the bank
until 1996. Linda and Leona
graduated from Geneva High School. As a
family we enjoyed camping and boating. We all skied and spent our weekends at
the lake. Our family suffered the
death of our daughter Lois Leona Nov 9th, 1990. It left Darcy and Daryn without their mother.
This has been a deep sorrow for all our family. We now have 5
grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren. In 1982 we moved to
Fairmont, and have been very happy here. Besides being a member of the GFWC
Fairmont Woman’s Club where I serve as International Outreach Chairman I also
belong the Fairmont Methodist Church and UMW, American Legion Auxiliary,
Fairview Manor Auxiliary and am treasurer of the Geneva VFW auxiliary. Life has been good, and
for that I am thankful. We will celebrate another Thanksgiving, another
Christmas day and another anniversary our 68th on Christmas day. October 2011 News Club Learns About Flowers The GFWC Fairmont

1944 at York, Nebraska. It was World War II time and my father, Carl
Schaldecker was in the army. My mother, Vema Jean was staying with her parents.
I was two years old when my father returned home. We then moved to the
Schaldecker family farm northwest of Grafton. I attended kindergarten at district #29 a mile south of the farm. The
school closed the next year so I went to Grafton for grades first through
eighth, then to Fairmont for the first part of my high school years. My last
year in high school I lived with my uncle Fred in Geneva doing housekeeping in
exchange for my room and board. I graduated in 1962 from Geneva High School.
After graduation I moved to Lincoln to attend business school, studying
accounting. While attending business school I met my husband Russell Seward. He
lived in the apartment house next door to mine. We would say hello as I walked
by to school. One day he said he would take me out for a steak dinner if I
would make him a homemade meal. A steak dinner sounded good, so I said yes. I
tried a new recipe and it turned out to be a disaster, but he took me out for
the dinner anyway. We were married September 11, 1963. My cooking must have
improved, because he's still around after more than 46 years. We have three children and five grandchildren. Shawn and wife Kellie
with Maresa, Sarah, and Jackson live in St. Paul, Nebraska. Kristine and
husband Scott Brown with Trenton and Kasha live just outside of Huron, South
Dakota. John and wife Lisa live near Brookings, South Dakota. John has a new
job at Rapid City, South Dakota so they will be moving in the near future. I worked for Banker's Life, Victor Business Forms, and King's before we
moved from Lincoln. When we left there I became a stay at home mom. We moved several times
here in Fillmore County before settling in Fairmont. In 1974 Russ bought the
welding shop in Exeter and I started doing the bookkeeping for him. June of
1980 I went to work at Fairview Manor. I am now the Laundry Mentor (supervisor)
and am working on my 31st year of employment there. My hobbies include sewing, gardening, crocheting, knitting, and
bowling. I'm a member of the Fairmont American Legion Auxiliary, York Lioness
Club, ABC birthday group, and the Bookworms' reading club. I've been a member of the GFWC Fairmont Woman's Club for 29 years,
serving in all officer positions. At district level I have served as Public
Affairs chairman and treasurer. I've enjoyed belonging to Woman's Club. There are so many projects you
can be involved in. Over the years I have attended many State and Mississippi Valley conventions
where I learned new things and met many interesting people.” By Nancy Seward March 2011 News Club Attends Fine Arts

for January Charlene Bristol was born
at the family home on a farm three miles northeast of Fairmont January 31,
1937. She was the only child born to
Ralph and Clara (Cudaback) Keil. When
she started 1st grade she went to Country School at District 27, which was only
a mile down the road. Maxine Ackerman
was her 1st & 2nd grade teacher and she was the only one in my grade. There were five other attending; this was a
nice school house with a full basement. In this era there was no running water
or electricity. She liked to ride her bicycle or would walk to school in good
weather. She has fond memories of those
days going to country school. She
transferred into Fairmont Public school for the 8th grade and graduated from
Fairmont High school in 1954. She took
piano lessons many years and played trombone in the band. She belonged to two 4-H clubs having done
most all of the projects, cooking, sewing and livestock. Taught a Sunday school class when she was in
High School. The summer before and after
graduation she worked at the local Farmers Coop in the office. In the fall she
went to Lincoln and was a bookkeeper for Nebraska Nat’l Life Insurance Company
several years. One Saturday summer evening
she had invited a girlfriend from Superior that she worked with at the office
to come home with her to Fairmont. She
insisted to drive her convertible which was fine with her because she always
rode the bus. They were cruising the
streets of Fairmont when they met these guys from Exeter driving around. One of them happened to be Dave Bristol who
was home on leave serving in the Marine Corp.
He was shipping out for Japan the next day for a year. Charlene and Dave kept in touch with each
other. Actually their parents were good friends and their mothers were little
neighbor girls when they were growing up north of Exeter years ago. Dave did return the next summer and received
his honorable discharge soon afterwards. Dave and Charlene were married at the
Fairmont Federated Church march 23, 1957.
The first year of their marriage they lived at Wichita Kansas where Dave
found work at Boeing. In March 1958 They
moved to a W. E. Aldrich farm 3 miles northwest of Fairmont and began farming
and raising a family of two sons and two daughters. Raising children you keep
pretty busy going to all their events. Theirs were involved in many things, especially
sports when they got older. Charlene’s neighbor Jean
Priefert had offered to pick her up and go with her to General Federated
Women’s club a few times when Eileen O’Connor was club president. The more she
went the more interested she became. Jean said you really need to get out of
the house once a month and become a member.
Well, she joined in 1968 when Roselia Beavers was club president. Charlene was asked to be
chairman of recognizing a high school “Senior of the Month” the first year. She
got involved in the organization and served as treasurer, secretary and was
club president 1983-1985. She remembers
the phone call from Jean Kolterman from Seward asking her if she would be
President of District IV in 1988-1990. This was a good experience with Jean
Hennings from Lincoln being the State president. She really enjoyed visiting the clubs in
District IV, the many fine ladies and learning what they accomplished in their
communities. She served as NFWC home life chairman for state president Iris
Koehler of Norfolk in 1990-1992. She also has been secretary
for GFWC Fillmore County many years and was president when the membership
became so few attending it was voted on to disband. Charlene remembers going to
a state convention at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln when she first joined.
The room was filled to capacity and the ladies dressed very well wearing hats
and gloves. The conventions are always interesting with lots of good programs
and of course, being with very special friends. Charlene is currently serving
on the local GFWC Nominating committee and she audits the treasurer’s books for
District IV. She is a member of the Fairmont Methodist Church, United Methodist
Women, Priscilla’s and a birthday club.
She enjoys listening to music, photography, auctions and coffee time
with her friends and is the keeper of the family genealogy, Dave and Charlene’s children
are: Debra and her husband Jeff Adelman, they live in Columbus. They have three
sons, Kenny, Kyle and Clint Torczon and daughter Clarissa Adelman. They all have been going to college. Kenny is now working in Lincoln and Kyle is
working in Omaha. Don and wife Linda
(Softley) Bristol live at rural Fairmont.
They have three children. Shane and wife Kelsey (Travis) Bristol live at
rural Fairmont. Their children are Kaeden and Kynnedy. Angela Bristol lives at
Cozad and Brady, a junior at Exeter-Milligan High School. Julie Bristol lives at Grafton and works at
Fairmont’s Fairview Manor. Keith and wife Dr. Lisa (Farkouch) Bristol live in
Denver. They have two young daughters
Laila and Leena, ages 3 and 1 year old. Dave and Charlene retired
from Farming in 2000 and moved into Fairmont in 2006. They will soon be celebrating their 54th
wedding anniversary. They are enjoying
their nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Club Announces FCS Winners
