The Theme is "Nature"

The dates for our 2009 Needlework Show are Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11, 2009. The show will be held in the Gallery at the Seasons, Eastmont Towers, 6315 “O” Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. Check in will begin Thursday evening with set up on Friday.

Our theme for the show is “nature”. As you know only needlework pieces that have not previously been in a Lincoln Needlework’s Show can be entered in the show, unless the piece is related to nature. The piece must be predominately related to nature. If the piece is of a house with a nice lawn, it would not qualify.

The Needlework Show is two-fold. First, it presents an opportunity for our Guild members to display their favorite needlework. This is not a juried show. The only two requirements are that the piece has not been shown in a previous Lincoln Needleworker’s Show and that the piece is in a completely finished state, such as framed or stitched into a pillow or finished item. Secondly, the show allows us the opportunity to share with the public our individual or Guild accomplishments in stitching and education. This presentation allows us to promote an appreciation for needlework as an art.

There will be 3 large items for the opportunity drawings; 2 lovely needlepoint framed pictures - Sara Holding a Cat and Tulip Trio; and a cross-stitch butterfly and flower afghan.

Sara Holding a Cat

Many of the guild members stitched on this needlepoint reproduction.

The original was painted by Mary Cassatt (pronounced ca-SAHT). Sara Holding a Cat is one of her most famous paintings, oil on canvas, painted 1908. Today the oil painting is in a private collection. Mary was an American painter and printmaker. She lived much of her adult life in France. Mary was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, which is now part of Pittsburgh. She was born into favorable circumstances: her father was a successful stockbroker and land speculator and her mother came from a banking family. Her family moved eastward, first to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, then to the Philadelphia area, where she began schooling at age six.

Tulip Trio

While Sara holding a Cat was stitched entirely in tent or basketweave (what might be thought of as the traditional needlepoint stitch) Tulip Trio shows how different stitches can be used in needlepoint. Use of different stitches gives a piece texture and movement. In this case the picture really doesn't do justice to piece (due to file size restrictions).

Butterfly Afghan

The afghan material was donated to the guild and Odessa has put it to good use. She has been stitching her heart out on this for months and the results are lovely. There four different butterfly/flower designs making up the 16 different afghan squares.

We hope you are all stitching and finishing new projects and those you had put aside for awhile. We will need entries from each member to make the show a success. Our goal is participation by 100% of our members.

Neva needs your entry forms turned in by the August 17th meeting. The show forms are word documents -- if you need them in a different format contact Joy and she can send you a copy in different format
