 INSTRUMENT SPOTLIGHT

This month's instrument spotlight is dedicated to the Upright Bass!
Perhaps you are wondering what is so special about the Upright Bass or any bass for the matter.
The Upright Bass is also known simply as a "Bass".
The upright bass is the second lowest pitched instrument of the strings family.
Many people enjoy the bass for it's intense sound on a boom box system or even a surround sound system. The bass amplifies the music and adds a "special touch" that no other instrument could make.
Though the bass is not used in all modern music today, it is mainly used in music such as Jazz, Blue Grass, and Contemporary.
I am certain there are many of you out there who absolutely love the bass, and for a very good reason.
The upright bass is loved and best known for it's deep, and mellow sound. Though it is deep and mellow, it has a certain quality of richness to it as well.
The average hight of the Upright Bass is approximately 6 feet from the base of it's support peg to the scroll.
The Upright Bass is so tall that most musicians have to stand or sit on a very high chair just to play!
It is usually placed between the musician's legs and supported by the knees and by the support peg on it's bottom.
The bass has an average of four strings as does the violin and most average Violas.
To be blunt, it just looks like an oversized violin.
Little is known about the origin of the bass as it dates back even past the 1600's.
The bass, for many reasons is a special instrument, and if you really know and instrument, you know that's true.
The bass is indeed a well deserving instrument for the Instrument Spotlight!
