We Made It! (Barely...)
In the difficult economic days we faced in 2010, there were times we weren't sure we would be able to keep serving our 130-plus clients we already had, never mind the new people and families calling us each day for help. Thanks to God's great grace and love, to our volunteers, our donors, great and small, and to a few wonderful vendors who helped us out, we survived! The full Annual Report for 2010 is still in process, but will be online soon. In the meantime, the Introduction is to the right near the bottom.

TMM_logo2_web.jpgWelcome to Tender Mercies Ministry

If you have ever read the New Testament story of the Good Samaritan, then you already have an idea of where our ministry comes from. In the story, the Good Samaritan didn't just stop and offer a little water to the injured man. He didn't stop to check what religion or race the man was. He went out of his way to change that injured man's life. He provided real world assistance – water, yes, but also food, shelter, medicine, and time to heal in safety. He provided this care without grumbling, or exaggerated sighing and rolling his eyes for others to see. He provided his care tenderly, with love and mercy as his motivation, not financial gain or applause.

That is what we strive each day to do – to Provide Real World Assistance with Christian Love and Mercy. We drive someone to Servicelink or a welfare office, yes, but when they come out to the car with pages of forms and a sense of being overwhelmed, we also talk with them, help them fill out the forms, ask if they have enough food and let them know where to get some. While we are meeting with them, we look at where they are living, or if homeless, where they frequently sleep. We make phone calls to agencies and hunt down resources.

The vast majority of the time, we do so quietly, so quietly in fact that many in the North Strafford County area don't even know we exist until one day they see a card, talk to a Transportation volunteer driver, or get referred by one of the agencies that we work with.

If that describes how you got here to our web page, or if you already know us, welcome!

DO YOU NEED HELP?
Be it helping to fill out forms, locating resources, providing prayerful support to a loved one who is incarcerated, budget planning, food planning, ...whatever the need, we're here to help!

We also have a transportation service which is not accepting new clients at this time. However, keep checking as we hope to expand this vital link for our clients this year!

 VOLUNTEER OPENINGS
Transportation Service Driver - Do you love to drive, and want to help people?
Our drivers using their own vehicle (with insurance) receive gas cards for the runs they are doing, plus if they choose to enroll, a generous mileage reimbursement that goes directly to them for driving medicaid recipients to medicaid approved appointments. Drivers can volunteer to run our wheelchair van if they choose not to use a vehicle of their own.

Administrative Assistant - Be part of the team that keeps the calls and paper flowing!
Our "AA"'s are a vital part of our ministry. As an organization running out of several different home offices, Admins answer and triage calls by urgency and program, forward information to appropriate volunteer staff, and do a variety of clerical functions. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to learn basic office skills or be able to have an office related reference to go on the resume. Hours are flexible, although we are most in need of AA's that can commit to a regular schedule such as Monday's from 10 to Noon, or three days a week 3 to 5pm. Volunteers for this position must be over 16, with parent/guardian approval letter.

Internet Communications - If you think you can make a better website for us, let's talk!
This position is much more than designing a web site - this position literally will encompass all the various forms of internet communication, from our web page to our face book presence, from posting daily content to overseeing the various affiliate programs we will be using. If you are thinking of turning your passion for internet into a career, this is one way. Volunteers for this position must be over 16, with parent/guardian approval letter.

Grant Writer (Volunteer or Intern) - Quick! Find The Money! This position will be identifying and seeking funding from various programs to help us expand our programming and services. As a volunteer, this is a "work at home" position, as an Intern you will be supervised by the Executive Director.

Client Specialist (Volunteer or Intern)
Client Specialists work directly one on one with clients to identify needs, develop a plan of action to address those needs, assist clients with everything form filling out forms to organizing kitchen cabinet contents. Being willing to hunt down resources, work closely with area agencies, and most of all to treat each and every person as the valuable human being they are with respect and care. Great for the retired nurse, case manager, or other Human Services Professional. As a volunteer, this is a partial "work at home" position, as an Intern you will be supervised by the Executive Director. A valid license, vehicle, and insurance is required.

From Our 2010 Annual Report
2010 Annual Report
Introduction

In the difficult economic days we faced in 2010, there were times we weren't sure we would be able to keep serving our 130-plus clients we already had, never mind the new people and families calling us each day for help. We watched sadly as many of our fellow non-profits, especially tiny ones like ours, had to close their doors completely.

Thanks to God's great grace and love, to our volunteers, our donors, great and small, and to a few wonderful vendors who helped us out, we survived!

Like any soldiers fresh from the battle, we have some scars. As hard a we tried, for example, we could not save the Farmington Furniture Bank program. Right now we are working on getting what is left of our inventory out to those people on our waiting lists, then we will “mothball” things until we have a bit more financial stability, and our own location to operate out of.

Amazingly, even with rising fuel costs, we were able to keep our Transportation Service running, although at a much reduced capacity. Also saved were our Client Services, Volunteer Services, and Prison Ministry programs.

We made significant progress in moving toward securing our 501C IRS certificate. This is a crucial process for any non-profit, as it allows individuals and businesses to garner certain tax benefits for donating to us. It is also a requirement for most of the grant applications we expect to pursue in 2011.

We also were able to add an extremely talented, experienced person to our Board of Directors. Nicole O'Rourke has over 25 years of volunteer and board level experience. She is serving as our Treasurer, and doing the bookkeeping, with Board President Amanda Degroat and Chief Executive Officer Brenda Eckels Burrows, aMGC auditing her work. Our financial picture is still sometimes precarious, but we are much more in the position now to look forward and create budgets instead of frequently looking at Brenda, who is also our Foundress, to fill the coffers from her wallet.

As the rest of the Annual Report will show, while we did accomplish a lot with very little, we continue to be severely underfunded. We are still seeking Board members who have business management, policy, governance, and board level experience. We have also accepted the pending resignation of Carl Johnson, Board Secretary and one of our original board members, due to health reasons. He is remaining in his position until we can secure a replacement.

Survival was certainly good, but we strive to do more than survive. Tender Mercies Ministry is working hard to make 2011 a year we not only survive, but thrive, providing real world assistance with Christian Love and Mercy.
