Why is The King of hearts Suicidal?

A poker deck is comprised of fifty-two cards and must include two jokers, two one-eyed jacks, a one-eyed king, and a suicide king."

The "suicide king" in a standard poker deck is the King of Hearts, a precarious rule to say the least. And take note that while the other three kings steadfastly avoid contact with the swords that they brandish, the King of Hearts has run his sword through his own skull. A grisly but accurate observation; check out the King of Hearts in any modern deck of playing cards.

So, why is the King of Hearts suicidal (or at the very least, depressed?)

Each of the four kings represents a historical figure:

- The King of Spades is King David

- The King of Diamonds is Julius Caesar

- The King of Clubs is King Charlemagne

- The King of Hearts is King Alexander the Great

"When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer."
