All courses planned for the CHHS are described here. Courses are presented in alphabetical order by subject, then in chronological sequence within subject area. Each has these division:
  • "Class Title" is given in full name, followed by the course abbreviation;
  • "Grades" refers to the usual and most common grade level/s appropriate for this course;
  • "Prerequisites" refers to any academic achievement or precursor course that is necessary in order to take this course;
  • "Course Objectives" describes the ultimate goal for all students of the course;
  • "Course Covers" describes all content that will be covered in this course;
  • "Required Text/s" provides information on the text title, author and/or publisher of the text required for student to purchase;

CLASS TITLE: *Logic 1: Tools for Thinking
Grade/s: 8th/9th - 12th.
Prerequisites: Students should be proficient in basic grammar (and will need to pass a Placement Test) and be proficient at reading (e.g., comfortable reading works of literature at the comprehension level of The Hiding Place, The Secret Garden, The Call of the Wild, The Chronicles of Narnia, etc.) and doing basic mathematics (http://www.classicallegacypress.com/logic1.htm#Student_Readiness).
Course Objective/s: To develop at least a primitive understanding of useful aspects of formal and informal logic, as demonstrated by a final grade of "C" or better in the course.
Course Covers: Statements and Truth Values; Logical Operators; the Moleculan (Propositional Logic) Language; the Logic of Moleculan Arguments; Distinction of Deductive, Inductive, and Conductive Arguments and Other Arguments (including the Appeal to Authority contrasted against the Appeal to Force, the Testimonial, and the Attributed Argument); Questions and Real Questions with their Answers.
General Layout of Course: This course covers roughly one lesson per week.
Required Text/s: Tools for Thinking by Norman Birkett. Please do not order this text directly from the publisher; the instructor is buying “in bulk” to allow for a discounted price per student. Please send $34 to the instructor for your textbook.

CLASS TITLE: *Logic 2: Traditonal Logic: Advanced Formal Logic
Grade/s:8th/9th and up.
Prerequisites: Logic 1 or equivalent.
Course Objective/s: To develop a further understanding of formal logic through subject material and case studies, as demonstrated by a final grade of "C" or better.
Course Covers: A further study of formal, deductive logic, dealing with the form and validity of arguments. The course covers figure and mood in categorical syllogisms, a study of hypothetical syllogisms, and an investigation of complex syllogisms. Writing assignments and case studies help show the relevance and importance of logic in history, literature, religion and philosophy.

CLASS TITLE: *Latin 1
Grade/s: 7-12
Prerequisites: no prior Latin necessary, but strong knowledge and manipulation of noun functions (SN, DO, IO, ObjPrep, PossN, PredNoun) is required. Placement test to pass necessary grammatical requirements is given; good independent study habits.
Course Objective/s:: To complete the text and gain mastery of concepts covered in order to proceed to the next level, as demonstrated by a final grade of "C" or better.

HISTORY

CLASS TITLE: *World History 1
Grade/s: 9th and higher
Prerequisites: none
Course Objective/s: To give students an understanding of Ancient History and the development of Western Civilization. Special attention will be paid to relating the Bible and Christian History to this study in order to show the critical importance of the foundations of our faith in the History of the World, as demonstrated by a final grade of "C" or better.
Course Covers: Studies from Creation into the ancient mid-east: Egypt, Greek, and Roman society; the fall of the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. We will also touch on the Reformation, which will be covered in more detail in the next, History 2, course.
General Layout of Course: Using Streams of Civilization, as a rule we will consider one chapter every two weeks, although some chapters will take only one week, while others may take 3 weeks.
Required Text/s: Streams of Civilization Volume I. This text is available through Rainbow Resource for $15.95.
Other Purchases Necessary: A standard 3-ring binder with at least four tab dividers (for Syllabus, Class Notes, Tests and Extra Paper); note cards will be helpful for research papers.
Homework Expectations: Homework will involve reading the text, doing a small project most weeks, studying for tests, and writing essays. This should be able to be accomplished in 45 min /day, 5 days/ week.
Tests/Grading: Grading will be made up of tests (1/3 of final grade), assigned graded essays (1/3 of final grade) and the last third being a combination of class participation and 2 research papers.

CLASS TITLE: *World History 2

CLASS TITLE: *Grammar 7: Foundational Grammar
Grade/s: 7th-9th
Prerequisites: none
Course Objective/s: To provide a "leveling ground" of all entry level students into the Hybrid as a prerequisite for the Composition classes and/or simply provide a complete 7th grade level grammar for any CHHS students, as demonstrated by a final grade of "C" or better.
Course Covers: Complete 7th grade grammar content: Antonyms/Synonyms; Sentence Types; Basic Parts of Speech: nouns, verbs (all forms) and tenses, adjectives, adverbs, preposition, object of the preposition, pronouns, indirect objects, direct objects, conjunctions (all types), interjections, subject, predicate; Punctuation; Editing Paragraphs (each week); Comparatives/Superlatives; Predicate Nouns/Adjectives; Active/Passive Voice; Phrases: adjective, adverb, verbals, participles, gerunds, infinitives: Clauses: independent/dependent; Opportunities for continuing writing at home (not necessarily part of the class but part of the text that parents can do at home): journal, expository, stories, narratives, persuasive, notes, letters, invitations, business letters, research report, taking notes, autobiographies, Fairy Tales, Haikus.
General Layout of Course: In general, each chapter is covered in one week; concepts are presented in class and then the students proceed to do the Lesson numbers specified on the syllabus throughout the week.
Required Text/s: The text used for this course is Shurley Grammar Level 7 by Brenda Shurley; each student will need the Student Textbook (hardbound, and this is all he will need if you have access to a copy machine); the parent will need the Teacher's Manual which provides all the answers, which is also hard bound. If you do not have access to a copy machine, the student will ALSO need the consumable Student Workbook. These texts can be purchased directly through the Shurley Grammar website for $70 in a "homeschool kit" (also check for individual prices) or through Rainbow Resource for $62.95 for the kit (again, ask for indivdiual prices). When going to the Rainbow Resource link, click on the link, type in "Shurley Grammar 7" in the search window, and hit the "search" button. These materials can also be found on Finder's Keepers for $58 (student workbook, Teacher Text and CD), with no shipping
Other Purchases Necessary:3-ring binder notebook with at least five tab sections (Syllabus, Class Notes, Work to Turn In, Work Returned, Notebook Paper). Optional purchase would be the accompanying CD which provides sentence jingles and answers to classifying sentences (highly recommended).
Homework Expectations: Following the class meeting, students will be required to work on drill and test sheets 3-5 days a week.
Tests/Grading: Grades are determined as follows: Average of test grades = %; Class participation = %; Homework = % (to be determined).


CLASS TITLE: *Composition 1: Foundational Writing: Ease in Writing Essays
Grade/s: 7th-9th
Prerequisites: A strong foundation in grammar, punctuation and spelling is required to begin this class, therefore a placement pretest must be passed before class placement is final.
Course Objective/s: Mastery of short answer and longer essay forms; also research writing ability mastery, as demonstrated by a final grade of "C" or better.
Course Covers: Composition concurrent with a review of sentence structure, beginning with single paragraphs, graduating lengths of essays, and finally long research papers. The course will allow students to master specific writing "formats" for various genre of writing (Examples, Classification, Definitions, Processes, Analogies, Cause & Effects, and Comparisons) as well as learn to critique their own and others' writing. Students will also learn how these styles of writing translate into everyday use.
General Layout of Course:
Required Text/s: The text used for this course is "Essay Architect"; each student will receive classroom copies from the teacher of necessary pages; parents will reimburse the teacher for such copies.
Other Purchases Necessary: a 3-ring binder with at least 3 tab sections (Syllabus, Class Notes, Tests) and a pocket folder; index cards will be required toward the end of the year.
Homework Expectations:Following the class meeting, students will be required to write daily, at least three times a week, with two or more feedback sessions to the teacher throughout the week.
Tests/Grading: Grades are determined as follows: All format essays = 30%; All non-essay writing assignments = 20%; research paper = 15%; Final Exam = 15%; letter writing = 5%; quizzes = 5%; journal = 5%; class participation = 5%.


CLASS TITLE: *Composition 2: Progymnasmata 1
Grade/s: 9th-12th
Prerequisites: A passing grade in Composition 1. Teacher interview necessary for incoming new students.
Course Objective/s: Mastery of the first six progymnasmata exercises, as demonstrated by a final grade of "C" or better.
Course Covers: Composition 2 expands the students' writing beyond the basic formats of Composition 1. A variety of genres of writing are learned: Narratives, Descriptions, Fables, Anecdotes, Proverb, and Refutation/Confirmation. These classical genre cover roughly the modern theory of composition in descriptive, narrative, expository and persuasive modes of writing. Students study these genres via famous, classical pieces and then practice their own pieces.
General Layout of Course:
Required Text/s: No text is required, as much of the course content utilizes resources found online. Teacher will need $5 per student to cover xeroxing costs.
Other Purchases Necessary:
Homework Expectations: The text and class expectations are rigorous and students will have a good deal of homework, writing throughout the week.
Tests/Grading: Grading will be determined as follows: All homework MUST adhere to prescribed guidelines for presentation (rough draft, revised rough draft showing changes and attached with appropriate headings). None will be accepted for evaluation otherwise, and will suffer a subsequent reduction in grade.


CLASS TITLE: *Composition 3: Progymnasmata 2
Grade/s: 10th-12th
Prerequisites: Composition 2 is mandatory
Course Objective/s:
Course Covers: Last Progymnasmata exercises; modern composition modes (narration, description, exposition, and an emphasis on argumentation.)
General Layout of Course:
Required Text/s: none (handouts will be provided).
Other Purchases Necessary: parents will pay a zeroxing fee for handouts provided in the class; $30 per student.
Homework Expectations: Daily writing. Assignments for grading to be presented IN CLASS on date due.
Tests/Grading: Class participation is essential and expected. Writing grades are necessarily subjective; essays and responses wil be graded and carry at least 80% of course value; quizzes on course content and any extra assignments will determine the complete grade. All homework MUST adhere to prescribed guidelines for presentation (rough draft, revised rough draft showing changes and attached with appropriate headings). None will be accepted for evaluation otherwise, and will suffer a subsequent reduction in grade.


CLASS TITLE: *Fundamentals of Literature
Grade/s: 8th and up
Prerequisites: none
Course Objective/s: This Literature course is designed to lay a firm foundation for the reading of higher level literature. Students will master skills of reading and understanding a selection at a deeper level. Literary analysis and the Elements of Literature will be stressed throughout the year giving students the skills to move on with their literature studies.
Course Covers: Fundamentals of Literature teaches the process of literary analysis that enables students to interpret and evaluate what is read in light of biblical truth. Readings offer instruction in six literary elements: conflict, character, theme, structure, point of view, and moral tone. The Student Text includes multiple literary selections for each of these six themes, brief introductions for each selection, reading-check questions, and author biographies. Included also is an English translation of Rostand's drama Cyrano de Bergerac.
General Layout of Course: Generally the students will be introduced to a theme in class, followed by the introduction of two reading selections. Their homework will then be to read the two selections with specified assignments for each.
Required Text/s: Students will need the Fundamentals of Literature Text from from BJU Press .
Other Purchases Necessary: In addition to the text, the students will also need the Tests Only .
Homework Expectations: Students should plan on reading several literature assignments per week (all found in their text) and do all assigned reading questions and/or writing responses. These assignments will vary depending on the literature selection. Homework is always due at the start of class each week.
Tests/Grading: Unit Tests will be given, which may be completed at home and returned to the teacher. The ratio for grading is: Homework 30%, Tests 45%, Class Preparation and Participation 25%. Missing assignments are averaged as a zero (or an F). These missing assignments should always be completed and submitted for a grade as soon as possible. Monthly averages with lists of missing assignments will be sent to each student via the parents' email address.

CLASS TITLE: Math 8/7
Grade/s: 6th-8th
Prerequisites: Saxon Placement Test at CHHS (not done independently) is MANDATORY; generally having passed Saxon 7/6 or other standard 6th grade text indicates readiness, however Saxon placement test score is necessary.
Course Objective/s: Complete the entire text and mastery of material as demonstrated by a final grade of "C" or better.

Course Objective/s: To provide a foundation of study skills for entry level students of the CHHS, in the areas of note-taking, time management and other. Mastery demonstrated by average grade for the course as a "C" or better.
Course Covers: Proper study habits, organization of school work, test-taking strategies, how to take good class notes, how to prepare for tests, how to increase memory skills, how to prioritize time, how to write an essay, and other.
General Layout of Course:
Required Text/s: Ron Fry's "The Great Big Book of How to Study"; this book is available online in many places including Amazon.com; be sure to acquire the 2000 copyright edition.
