EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO TEACH IN THE CHHS: Teachers in the CHHS are considered to be either "Professional", with a Bachelors/Masters in their field plus teaching experience, OR, "Experiential" having a minor degree and/or general homeschool/co-op teaching experience. Professional teachers receive [pay] starting at $25/hr, with an increase as the number of students enrolled increases (up to $35/hr). Experiential teachers receive pay starting at $12.50/hr, also with an increase as enrollment increases (up to $17.50/hr).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO TEACH: In addition to the above mentioned experience requirements, teachers of the CHHS must:
  • Sign a Statement of Faith
  • Sign a Teaching Contract which adheres to all CHHS Policies
  • Submit Syllabus of teaching plan by specified date for review
  • Deliver prompt and conscientious courses while at Hybrid
  • Be available to students during the week for support
  • Have regular email access for administration and student communications

OPTIONS FOR THOSE ALREADY EMPLOYED FULL TIME: The homeschool community still can use you! Since the CHHS class periods run from 12:15pm to 6:15pm, professionals who work full time can still reach the school in time to teach 1-3 periods, depending upon the time of the close of their full time position, and the distance necessary to travel to the CHHS.

TEACHING PROCESS: Overall, all CHHS teachers need to keep in mind their goal: CHHS Teachers Facilitate Independent Learning by providing primary academic content which students then take for independent study/practice during the week, all being supported by the homeschooling parent. With that in mind, specific requirements in doing such are listed in alphabetical order below.

Behavior and Discipline: The CHHS holds parents responsible for the behavior of their students during class and any other time their students are involved in CHHS activities. The CHHS assumes that parents are providing sufficient oversight to ensure their students prepare for class, remain attentive during class, and manage their assignment and exam deadlines. We also assume that parents are providing sufficient oversight to ensure their students remain respectful and considerate during other school activities. Disruptive, disrespectful or discourteous students will typically be given one opportunity to repent and obey. A repeated offense will result in corrective action with the CHHS Board, and disruption after correction has begun can result in expulsion from the CHHS without any monetary reimbursement to the family.

Biographies: are for the purposes of parents being able to have a feel for the credentials and personalities of those teaching their children. Teachers should simply follow the examples of other bios already provided on this website. Even though this website is not "open" in search directories, the non-detectability of the website cannot be absolute: teachers may wish their bios to not be seen on this website. In this case, bios still need to be submitted to the Director, and parents can receive hard copies of those bios upon request.

College References: Students are encouraged to request their teachers to fill out college application and scholarship academic references, however, at certain times of the year these requests can become overwhelming, especially if they are short-notice. Teachers must inform families that they must give a teacher at least 2 weeks to complete the routine college reference forms. Students should use the same reference for both admissions and scholarship applications whenever possible. With each reference request the family must provide the teacher a pre-addressed stamped envelope, any special handling instructions (e.g., if the teacher's name must be signed across the seal), and sufficient funds to cover additional delivery requirements (e.g., FedEx). Unless there is a unique relationship that makes such an assessment possible, CHHS teachers will not provide non-academic references, such as those required for jobs, camp counselor assignments, and other application-based positions.

Communication: The guidelines that the CHHS follows in interacting and corresponding with the families served are as follows:
  • teachers are to respond to emails within 1-2 business days. When business travel or vacation will preclude ability to respond to email, families will be notified in advance.
  • primary method of reaching families is through email. Families are responsible for maintaining their email address current with the CHHS, and the email address used MUST be a PARENTAL address so that all deadlines, notices, course updates, etc. go through the parent first. The parent can then decide how to pass this onto the student. NO EMAIL WILL BE SENT TO THE STUDENT WITHOUT BEING SENT TO THE PARENT.
Conflict Resolution: On rare occasions a family may be dissatisfied with a teacher's performance. In those cases we insist that the family contact the teacher directly, usually by phone vice email, to resolve the problem themselves (but notifying the CHHS administration upon doing so). If the family remains dissatisfied after discussing the matter with the teacher, they can refer it to the CHHS Director for mediation. Disagreements with the Director may be referred to the CHHS Board. Decisions by the Board are final.

Course Descriptions: are for the purposes of parents to know exactly what is to be covered in the courses they desire for their children. The same format should be followed for each Course Description; teachers should simply follow the format of those Course Descriptions already seen on this website.

Course Format: Since the CHHS courses support home education, they are primarily independent study classes: teachers use their expertise to provide initial academic content, guide the curriculum, and provide personalized evaluation and feedback. Each class meets in a “live session” once each week at the CHHS School, followed then by a week of independent assignments to be completed by the student at home. Students or parents may evaluate daily work against a key provided by the teacher, turn in “homework” via email, and parents are to be familiar with course requirements and oversee all activities of the student. The teacher meanwhile provides initial course instruction each week, evaluates reports, papers, projects, and exams. Teacher evaluation includes an objective grade and feedback for improvement. Teachers can usually expect to spend a minimum of 2 hours each week in preparing for each separate course class, collecting email homework for students and providing feedback to students; any excessive additional time needed by a student needs to be described to the parent and the teacher and parent need to work out any additional compensation that the teacher might need to meet a struggling students’ needs.

Credits and Transcripts: The CHHS School is not accredited and is not seeking accreditation. Instead, since the CHHS School supports home education, it does not provide credits or a transcript. Instead, the CHHS teachers will provide objective evaluation that families can use in creating their own transcripts in a manner best suited to their educational requirements. The CHHS, can however, provide families with these two resources for record keeping and/or creating transcripts:
  • (1) North American Regional Schools (NARS) is a service available online to homeschoolers to aid in transcript production, record keeping and obtaining a High School diploma. They offer a free, 55-page handbook that can be downloaded from their website. Contact information for NARS is: North Atlantic Regional Schools, 25 Adams Avenue, Lewiston, Maine 04240, 207-753-1522 or www.narsonline.com
  • (2) Abundant Life Christian Academy is a service for homeschoolers that provides accountability, course selection counseling, standardized testing, college guidance, a High School diploma and more. Contact information for ALCA is Abundant Life Christian Academy, 2195 Woodbridge Avenue, Edison, New Jersey, 08817, 732-985-6717 or www.abundantlifechristian.com
Deadlines: CHHS teachers will enforce student homework and project deadlines as we consider deadline management to be an area often lacking in homeschool students, and one that is an essential skill for college or job preparation. Also, students need to honor deadlines so teachers can effectively manage their own work load. Teachers should deduct 5-10% per day for work submitted to them late. They will extend grace when circumstances beyond the family's control preclude timely submission, but only where the problem could not have been anticipated and where the family continues to make reasonable effort to submit the work as close to the deadline as possible. When a family's planned event will preclude timely submission, the CHHS expects the family to increase the student's workload before the event and submit the work in advance, rather than allowing the student to fall behind and increasing the student's workload afterward.

Emergency Lesson Plans: All teachers must plan for (in addition to their class content specific plans) two days’ worth of adequate subbing activities that would be appropriate at any time during the scope of the course of the class, and would be able to be conducted by any substitute not necessarily familiar with the course content. As time advances through the course, the emergency lesson plan can be updated to reflect the knowledge that the students currently have. The original set of emergency sub plans are to be turned in to the Curriculum Coordinator at the time of Teaching Plans submissions (June 15th preceding school year).

Hired: Immediately upon being hired, CHHS teachers need to familiarize themselves with the teaching process requirements. As soon as possible after being hired, teachers need to submit a "biography" about themselves; they need to complete a "Course Description" of the course/s they will teach, and they need to submit "Teaching Plans". Each of these requirements will be detailed below.

Homework: In general, homework is expected of all students in the CHHS, 4-5 days a week so that the year’s worth of material can be adequately covered. Actual amount of homework is determined by each teacher of each class, and is specified in the Specific Course Descriptions. Keeping records of students’ quantity and quality of homework is mandatory; each teacher will be given a Students’ Performance Record form for each class they teach. Also, due to the nature of CHHS classes meeting only once a week, it is vital that the majority of each class period together be spent on teaching/using new content material and that checking over homework be kept to a minimum. As much as possible, homework/assignment answers can be sent in by the end of the week, via email, to the teacher, to maximize individual feedback and minimize class time being spent on simply "checking work". In some cases, such as math classes, teachers may give parents an answer key by which students or parents self-check homework during the week to also further reduce checking work in class time.

Review Sessions: When filling out the 33-Week Scope and Sequence Form, each teacher is to build in *two* cumulative review sessions (one approximately mid year; the other toward the end of the year) so in essence, each teacher is planning 31 *content* class sessions. The material of these review days should be such that it can be handed over to a Sub or even given to students for independent work in the event of snow days and/or absence by the teacher.

Storage of Materials: Materials and Sub materials are to be kept in the available storage area of the Host Facility. All teachers are to keep in mind space limitations and keep size of sub materials to a minimum. All sub materials need to be marked with (1) Class Title; (2) Name of Regular Teacher/Name of Sub Teacher; (3) Complete sub plan directives.

Subbing responsibilities: It is imperative that teachers are absent as infrequently as possible. Since parents are depending upon teachers for a full year of academic content to be covered in the CHHS’s 33 weeks, it is vital that teachers realize their responsibility toward such. All teachers are required to find their own permanent Substitute teacher for as many classes as they themselves teach. In choosing a Sub, teachers can look first for other teachers in the CHHS that are not teaching their period, parents who have signed on to “audit” the class, or any other CHHS staff that might be willing to Sub. All Sub selections must be submitted to the CHHS Director and approved. Subs are to provide as much of the originally planned lesson as possible so as not to disrupt the planned Scope and Sequence, so teachers must get adequate plans to them at the time of the absence. Teachers are responsible to work out their own method of compensation for their Subs; this can be as creative as both parties agree to, however, the CHHS recommends 75% of a day's pay. In the event that the teacher needs his/her Sub, it is the teacher’s responsibility to notify the Sub; if the given Sub for some reason is unavailable, the class will have to meet in the Study Hall with emergency lesson plans (kept always on the premises of the CHHS School).

Teaching Plans: Two types of Teaching Plans are to be completed by all teachers in the CHHS: (1) Full Scope and Sequence, and (2) a 33-week Syllabus.

(1) Full Scope and Sequences: A full Scope and Sequence is a seven-part document that each teacher must provide for each class taught. Full Scope and Sequences are due by August 15 prior to the start of the school year. The seven parts consist of:
  • 1. Course Description-directly from the website, the nine-part description of each class offered in the CHHS, with three additional lines of information: “Teacher”, “Substitute Teacher” and “List of Students”.
  • 2. Teacher Introduction-information about the teacher; teacher’s interest/involvement with the course content; teacher contact information.
  • 3. Role of the Teacher-teacher’s role in this class specifically defined.
  • 4. Role of the Student-specifically define steps and tips for student to succeed in this class; plot out specifically how the student should structure his week outside CHHS and any other tips for the student to do well (formally called “STEPS TO SUCCESS”).
  • 5. Role of the Parent- the parent’s role is in this class specifically described in detail.
  • 6. Emergency Sub-Plans: those to be used by anyone, at any time, in the event of an unforeseen absence by the teacher.
  • 7. Syllabus-the week-by-week layout of the course work (33 direct contact class days plus Orientation day, Recognition Night and any vacation weeks’ work). Format is standardized and contains at least three columns: (a) Week #/Date (ALL THE WEEKS from Orientation through Recognition, including vacation weeks); (b) Material to be Covered in Class; (c) Material to be covered independently at home throughout the week following class.
(2) 33-Week Syllabus: By June 15th of the preceding school year (or within two weeks of being hired), each teacher needs to submit a 33-week Syllabus (which is part #7 of the Full Scope and Sequence, described above) of the content of the class/es s/he will be teaching to the Curriculum Coordinator. In most cases, a specific syllabus will be provided for the teacher to follow precisely for the upcoming year, only to be tweaked in terms of dates, etc.; some courses will allow the teacher to devise their own syllabus, but ALL SYLLABI MUST BE APPROVED. If a teacher is devising their own syllabus, it must lay out textbook/material evenly and predictably over the 33 weeks. Evenly means to lay work out, as much as possible, with equal work load per week. Predictably means that the paced work should follow a predictable pattern each week.

Once the syllabus is approved, each teacher then needs to make copies of the Full Scope and Sequence: one final approved copy is to go to the Curriculum Coordinator; one copy to the Teacher Sub, and each student's parent will need a copy to be handed out on Orientation Day.

(Note that teachers plan for 33 classes, and are paid for 34. The 34th “class” is the Promotion Day Ceremony at the end of the year.) Some classes will need this day to hand in final exams; some will provide a presentation for the end of the year. Teachers are expected to do that planning, when necessary, and are also required to attend the ceremony as part of their responsibility to the Hybrid. .

Teaching Materials: Teachers at the CHHS School are expected to furnish, at their own expense, all of their own teaching texts, materials and teaching aids.

Testing and Grades: In general, regular testing, grades for such, and a final grade will be given by the teacher for all students in all classes of the CHHS. Specifics of how grades are determined are at the discretion of each teacher, with approval from the CHHS Director, but in general run as one grade for the whole year, determined by an average of test grades, quality and quantity of homework, as well as class participation.
