GUIDELINES FOR SOCIAL EVENTS

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES HUDDLE GROUP

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) once again this year has a homeschool “Huddle” (club) for boys and girls; this year the Huddles will accomodate grades 7 through 12 (ages 12 and up). This club is open to any homeschool groups such as NJHSA, MCCHE, and SCCHE; FCA is also open to non-homeschoolers as well. FCA is a national organization devoted to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to people through the vehicle of sports. For over 40 years, thousands of professional college and high school athletes and coaches have participated in FCA Huddle Groups, attended clinics and sport camps as well as participated in outreach programs all over the country. Currently, young people are meeting in 7,400 clubs across our nation, transforming their lives by serving Jesus Christ.

"Huddles" are the main component of the FCA experience. The "Huddle" is the place where athletes and coaches can grow spiritually, whether that means initial salvation, or traveling further along the road of spiritual maturity. The goals of the "Huddle" include:
  • Fellowship: Building a caring and accepting community among our children.
  • Growth: Developing a balanced Christian life that encourages a growing obedience to Jesus Christ.
  • Outreach: Demonstrating Christ to the world around us through our words and deeds.
Each "Huddle" meeting consists of a non-competitive activity, such as basketball, followed by a devotional time and prayer. The "Huddles" during the 2004-2005 School Year will take place at Green Pond Bible Chapel along Rt. 513 in Newfoundland. Meetings are from 7:00-9:00pm, and in general are the 2nd SATURDAY of each month. Following is the 2004-2005 Calendar; the first "Huddle" meeting will take place on Saturday, September 11.   • If you think you will be attending somewhat regularly, please send your name, phone number and email address in the contact box (bottom right) on the home page;
  • Also, a regular attendee is needed to help substitute for Glenn when he is out (usually two times a year); contact through the same means as above.

    EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHHS PARTICIPANTS (Parents and Student)

    The following section provides information about:
    • I. AUDIT OPPORTUNITIES
    • II. CO-OPERATIVE COMPONENT OPPORTUNITIES
    • III. TUITION-REDUCING OPPORTUNITIES
    Please keep in mind that volunteering helps keep costs down and helps provide additional, extra-curricular activities for the students. The CHHS needs parental involvement if we are to offer some of these extra opportunities for our students!

    I. AUDIT OPPORTUNITIES: Parents should be aware that once their student is enrolled in a Hybrid class, the parents themselves have the opportunity to ÒauditÓ the coursework. Parents might want to do this in order to learn the material for themselves so that they may (a) assist their participating student in his/her homework, (b) prepare to teach their own younger children in the future, or (c) simply learn the course content themselves. Auditing parents are not required to pay any tuition for auditing a course, however, they are to realize that in signing up to audit a course, they automatically become the ÒSubstitute TeacherÓ for that course (see guidelines below for Substitutes under ÒIII. Tuition-Reducing OpportunitiesÓ). All Substitute teachers are compensated monetarily for each occasion for which they sub. (Should multiple parents audit a class, subbing responsibilities will be divided equally among them).

    II. CO-OPERATIVE COMPONENT OPPORTUNITIES: As of the 2005-2006 School Year, it is REQUIRED of each participant in the Hybrid to take on at LEAST one "co-operative component" to help out in the inner workings of the Hybrid School (see Parent Policies). These "Extra-Curricular Opportunities" below are just a FEW of the available positions parents can hold to fulfill their "Co-operative Component"; a full list of all positions is available upon request.:

    • 1. ACTIVITY: FCA Program
      DESCRIPTION: homeschool "Huddle" (club) for boys and girls; grades 6 through 12 (ages 12 and up). Open to homeschool groups and non-homeschoolers as well. FCA is a national organization devoted to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to people through the vehicle of sports. The "Huddle" is the place where athletes and coaches can grow spiritually, whether that means initial salvation, or traveling further along the road of spiritual maturity. The full description of FCA can be found above this section
      DESCRIBED NEEDS: Our FCA program already has main leaders, we just need regular attendees for assistance and Òback upÓ if the main leaders canÕt make it.

    • 2. ACTIVITY: Yearbook Coordinator
      DESCRIPTION: Coordinate the makings of a yearly ÒYearbookÓ for the CHHS. Capture most/all the classes, individual students and teacher, and any common extra-curricular activities (FCA, Service Projects, Socials, Field Trips, etc) on film and organize into an affordable, purchasable product available to all students/teachers. Can work with or without student assistance. Creative juices can flow!
      DESCRIBED NEEDS: Coordinate all facets of the photographing and representations of the CHHS in a year-end ÒyearbookÓ.

    • 3. ACTIVITY: Monthly Service Projects
      DESCRIPTION: Organized opportunity for CHHS students to give of themselves to the service of others, in JesusÕ Name. The CHHS has connections already with two organizations which could get the Hybrid Service Projects started off:
      (1) "New York City Relief" and would like to utilize this relationship on behalf of our students. More details about this organization can be seen on their website: http://www.nycr.org/ This avenue for service will probably entail once-a-month trips into Elizabeth and/or NYC, via buses organized by NYCRelief, to distribute clothing, food, etc.
      (2) The CHHS also has connections with a more local monthly service project group: Volunteers for Morris County. They send out a weekly email flyer called "Get Involved", which includes the most recent volunteer opportunities, volunteer orientation, training schedules and information about their affiliated agencies' upcoming events. To receive this email bulletin, one must contact: vmcvolprograms@att.net or call Llinda Stark, Director of Youth Services, 973-538-7200x18.
      (3) "Touch the World" mission trips organized by Jeff Boucher of Wyckoff, NJ. (More details to be added).
      DESCRIBED NEEDS: By using either of these service organizations (or other, approved by the CHHS) we need volunteer/s willing to oversee and communicate these projects with interested CHHS students.

    • 4. ACTIVITY: Social Director for CHHS students
      DESCRIPTION: Opportunities for CHHS students to get together, non-academically, but rather in a structured, supervised social environment. Such examples might inclulde monthly "Pizza and Game Nights" or other. These gatherings could be offered to meet at Green Pond (as long as the schedule is approved by Green Pond) or rotate amongst participantÕs hosting homes, or a combination thereof.
      DESCRIBED NEEDS: Someone willing not necessarily to host or plan all of the activities themselves but to coordinate and communicate the social activities for and with the CHHS participant families. Such a program has already been successfully run last year in the CHHS:
      • Sept-none
      • Oct-designing sweatshirt logos
      • Nov-attended movie (Cat in the Hat)
      • Dec-Skylands Ice World: Ice Skating outting
      • Jan-movie night at Coan's (Pirates of Carribean)
      • Feb-Bowling
      • Mar-Fairview Lake Leadership Retreat/Eccola dining out
      • Apr-Sight and Sound Theatre trip (Abraham and Sarah)
      • May-none
      • June-Dorney Park fund-raiser and trip
      • July-Pool Party at the Perry's
      • Aug-Ginty Pool Party in Morristown

    • 5. ACTIVITY: Study Hall Monitor Volunteers
      DESCRIPTION: Sit in the Fellowship Hall during various periods to supervise (not teach) students in Study Hall. (During the 20-minute breaks and if students have a break in between classes, they are ALWAYS to be in the Study Hall, quietly studying. It is NOT a social time, and students must have materials to be independently working on).
      DESCRIBED NEEDS: Parents willing to supervise Study Hall while they wait for their students in class.

    • 6. ACTIVITY: Dinner Break Coordinator
      DESCRIPTION: Students taking more than two courses in the Hybrid or taking courses later in the afternoon may well need to have some sort of ÒdinnerÓ while at the CHHS. Parents are welcomed to pack simple bag lunches for students to eat (in the Fellowship Hall only) or they can be part of a ÒPizza ClubÓ if a parent would like to coordinate this opportunity. The Village Inn on Rt. 23 (3 miles from the church) offers large, cheese pies for a special rate on Mondays. Participating Hybrid families can order, on a week-ahead basis, numbers of slices of pizza for their students (at a $1 per slice) if someone would like to orchestrate this.
      DESCRIBED NEEDS: Parent/s willing to take the monthly orders of numbers of slices of pizza necessary to feed participating students; call in the orders to Village Inn on a weekly basis and pick them up each week.

    • 7. ACTIVITY: Administrative Assistant
      DESCRIPTION: At times the administration has phone calls, letters or emails to send out that require follow-up and their doing so, on top of all the other administrative tasks proves to be too demanding upon their time. Any parent who is in the Hybrid and who is willing to help out with some of these tasks is welcome to do so! Some such opportunities include: ad contacts, scheduling Open House, Placement Testing organization.

    • 8. ACTIVITY: Parent Helpers
      DESCRIPTION: There are times in the Hybrid year that we need parents to physically assist in the carrying out of an event. Such times include: Orientation Night, Hostess Open House, Proctor Placement Testing and helping with Recognition Night.

    • 9. ACTIVITY: Sibling Club Coordinator
      DESCRIPTION: Our insurance company has determined that siblings of Hybrid enrollees can indeed be Òon the premises during Hybrid class timesÓ, and covered under our policy for an additional fee of $35 per sibling, per year. (Siblings accompanying an escort to simply drop off or pick up a Hybrid student is allowed and does not necessitate insurance coverage.) Siblings in the Sibling Club MUST be age 5 and up (an insurance rule). Sibling Club would allow parents to stay with siblings of enrollees, in structured activities during the operation of Hybrid School classes (such as working on homeschool work, organized games, gymnasium play time and/or other approved activities).
      DESCRIBED NEEDS: A volunteering parent needs to be the coordinator of the Sibling Clubs, which would entail collecting names of all participating siblings, and coordinating the sibling club schedule with Hybrid, Co-op and Co-op Club classes.

    IV. TUITION-REDUCING OR PAID OPPORTUNITIES: in addition to the above Volunteer Opportunities, there are opportunities for participating families to either reduce their tuition payments and/or receive monetary compensations. If sufficient coverage of these positions is not met by volunteering families or teachers, it will be necessary to hire outside help to cover these positions, thus additional monetary charges would have to be distributed to each family. These positions are:
    • 1. Substitute Teachers-all private schools in the area utilize participating parents as their primary substitute teacher pool. Our CHHS will utilize this resource as well. In the event that a teacher is unable to teach on a given day, ready substitute plans and materials will be handed over to Substitute teachers to conduct the day as close to the regularly scheduled content as possible (or content that will support the regularly scheduled class). Substitutes are compensated monetarily and directly by the teacher a sum equal to roughly 50% of one day's. (Parents need to recall that they have the opportunity to "audit" or sit in on ANY class that their child is taking---in order to assist their student or simply to learn the material for themselves---but doing so would automatically make them the Substitute for the year for that class). Volunteer Substitutes can sign up for whichever of the courses offered that they are interested in; they will be paid for as many periods as teachers are out for on a given day. Volunteer Subs can assume they are not needed if they have not been contacted by the Administration at the outset of the Hybrid School day (if no teachers are out, they will not be required to stay during the Hybrid School day) but they should be available on Mondays and will be Òon callÓ in the event of a sudden emergency.
    • 2. Cleaning-one cleaning person can earn 1 free class* per each 45-minute cleaning assignment (each cleaning assignment has an assigned determined required time necessary and adequate to complete the job). Each "45-minute cleaning assignment" means completing that job each CHHS day for the whole year. Substitute cleaners must be found by the primary cleaner should the primary cleaner be absent; the two parties involved would set up their own compensations. A list of cleaning assignments and required times are available to interested volunteers. (*CHHS administration determines which class/es for a given student can be considered from his schedule to be "free"). NOTE: If no volunteer steps forward for cleaning, a cleaning person will be hired, and costs will be divided equally amongst participating families.

    GUIDELINES FOR SOCIAL EVENTS

    CHHS Monthly Socials Guidelines
    • 1-Socials are designed to be a stretch of time together, supervised and fun!; to provide students with approved, structured, chaperoned events to meet outside the CHHS school day;
    • 2-We seek to have a MINIMUM of one Social a month, but if other good ideas come up, more than one a month is possible;
    • 3-Socials are designed to be “family driven”. This means a CHHS family can come up with an idea for a social, organize it or host it, and help set it in motion. Any ideas MUST be cleared with the administration first, and help organizing can be obtained through the Student Liaison;
    • 4-The Hosting/organizing family basically determines the place, time, date, and agenda that works best for them, giving the approved notice to the group at least a month in advance. Last year, Saturdays worked well for the majority of participants;
    • 5-Amount of chaperones needed per event varies, depending upon the activity (more chaperones for large-crowd events, such as Dorney Park); exact number of chaperones will be specified once the event is approved by the administration;
    • 6-Students can plan the agenda themselves, but they must make sure that games, music, events, etc. are acceptable to a broad range of Christian moral stands (avoid anything controversial);
    • 7-Finally, ALL Socials (and any other CHHS sponsored event) MUST follow ALL the behavioral policies set forth on the website. This extends to dress code and all other expectations of behavior.
    • 8-Socials are designed for HYBRID STUDENTS ONLY (no outside friends) and oftentimes Sibling Club students are welcomed to attend as well (depending upon the event);
    • 9-Socials organization should include this information:

      Name of Event:
      Hosting Family:
      Date:
      Time:
      Deadline to sign-up:
      Cost:
      No. Chaperones Needed:
