Our History, Our Beliefs, Our Mission
Our Denomination's History...
Our church springs from a rich tradition of studying and spreading the gospel to every corner of society, which was begun the 1729 in England and led by John and Charles Wesley. The United Methodist Church is the result of the 1939 merger of three Methodist bodies (Methodist Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal South and Methodist Protestant churches) and a 1968 union of the Evangelical United Brethren and the Methodist churches.
The United Methodist Church now has over 10 million members worldwide.
Our History in Green Village...
The first Methodist clergy appeared in Green Village in 1828. Methodism started slowly in Green Village until 1842. In 1842, two young men, who had returned to the area - Ellis Parcells and Levi Muchmore - began holding Methodist services in Ellis Parcells' home. By 1843, the first Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated in Green Village. For over 160 years we have been a visible Christian presence and witness in the community.
Our Denomination's Mission...
Today we continue our devotions to creating disciples for Jesus Christ and making the good news available to anyone who desires to hear it. All preaching and teaching is grounded in Scripture, informed by Christian tradition, enlivened by personal experience, and tested by reason. Along with other Christian denominations, we believe in God - expressed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The United Methodist Church is part of the church universal. All persons, regardless of race, color, national origin, status or economic condition, are welcome to attend our churches, receive Holy Communion and be baptized and admitted into membership.
Our Beliefs...
The heart of our Christian faith is Christ's ministry of outreaching love. We are all called to minister wherever Christ would have us work to heal and free others. United Methodists believe in God's grace, which means the unearned and loving action of God in our daily lives. In spite of suffering, violence and evil in the world, we assert the God's grace exists everywhere. Despite any circumstance, we remain creatures brough to live by a just and loving God. The reign of God is both a present and future reality.
Our Mission In Green Village...
The purpose of the church is to provide opportunities for the worship of God and for the Christian Education of all our members, children and adults. We are called to provide a visible Christian presence in our community and to serve as the home base from which to reach out to others in the name of Jesus Christ
Our church is a vehicle to assist persons in their on-going search for God and God's presence in their lives. The church is a place where individuals should be accepted, made to feel that they belong and where they can find meaning and self-worth. Our church is a catalyst promoting individual re-evaluation in the light of the biblical standards of our faith, and reaching out to minister physically and spiritually to those in need.
We further recognize that we are Christians in the Methodist tradition, and a part of our purposes is to participate fully in the larger structure of the United Methodist Church through our prayers, our gifts and our service.
We Pride Ourself On...
Remaining a small, vibrant country church in a suburban area. We offer a community small enough to know each member's name, but large enough to offer meaningful programs and ample opportunities for fellowship.
