Announcements

Welcome back to what will be another great year of scouting! The Fall season will be lots of fun for all our new and returning boys as well as our new Tigers and Lions.

Our Summer Program was lots of fun....

The Pack camped in June at the Vernon Camporee...they got to go for a hike on the Appalachian Trail, tryout the Zip Line, try their hand at Totem Pole Carving, BB Guns, and Archery...as well as did a great skit at the evenings fire.

We did a Family Camp Out in July at Swartswood Lake...the boys go to build and launch Water Bottle Rockets and play games.

In August we did our Splash Party at Lake Neepaulin. Everyone had fun swimming, playing games, and eating!

Cub Scouts 2010 Cub Scouts 2010 is a piloted and successful method of delivering the existing Cub Scout program that is handbook-based and focuses on den activities leading to youth advancement and higher retention. Cub Scouts 2010 is supported by a new leader resource, the Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide. This new resource contains all the information a den leader or Cubmaster needs to deliver the planned program. Check out the Sample Meeting Resource Guide and the webinar.

Pack 97 is now on Facebook!!!

Go to Facebook.com and search for Sussex Pack 97 I have the page as an open page right now, so everyone can post and become a friend. Become a friend and try it out.

The council is now on Facebook and Twitter. If you go to the Council's homepage, and scroll down to the bottom, they have the links to them there.

WHY A TOUR PERMIT?
The single highest number of injuries and fatalities in the United States and Scouting are caused by motor vehicle accidents.

A tour permit that has been filed with and approved by the local Scout Council prior to the activity registers the activity as an official Scouting activity. Insurance coverage only applies to official Scouting activities.

Reinforces driver requirements and insurance requirements and encourages routine maintenance checks on vehicles prior to trip.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF TOUR PERMITS?
Provides the Council Risk Management Committee with information regarding outings and trips, i.e. tour permit helps you know "what is going on".

Reinforces leader requirements, especially in regards to Youth Protection, transportation, and aquatic activities. Make sure current forms are used.

Can provide information necessary to locate a pack, troop, or post if an emergency arises and lets the council know point of contact when an emergency situation develops.

In summary, tour permits reinforce planning, safety, and two-deep leadership.

WHY IS IT IMORTANT TO FILE THE TOUR PERMIT TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE?
The two-week (in advance) filing requirement helps ensure that trips are well planned. Because of the large number of tour permits filed, late/rush filings cause delays for those who have filed promptly

If there are concerns with a tour permit, the two-week filing requirement allows time for correction avoiding cancellation of the trip.

WHAT ACTIVITIES REQUIRE A NATIONAL TOUR PERMIT APPLICATION?
For tours or trips of 500 miles or over, one way, a National Tour Permit application is required. The National Tour Permit must be submitted 30 days prior to the trip. It is first approved by the local council and then by the regional office of the Boy Scouts of America.

WHAT ACTIVITIES REQUIRE A LOCAL COUNCIL TOUR PERMIT APPLICATION?
It is not necessary to requires tour permits for all activities. Tour permits are required for all activities out of the Unit's town and whenever an aquatics or climbing activity is held.

Most short, in-town den trips of a few hours do not require a tour permit; however it is recommended that dens obtain permission slips from parents.

As of January 1, 2010 Council will only accept the new tour permit application from the National Office. The primary difference between the National form and our old paper tour permit is that the new form requires Weather Hazards Training but does not require Risk Zone training. This is now Patriots' Path Council’s policy. Risk Zone training is still highly recommended and classes will be offered throughout the year. Online Weather Hazards training is also available at the MyScouting website. Tour permits can be sent to: tourpermit@ppbsa.org. or faxed to 973-765-9143

Foxit Reader will let you read a PDF, make changes to it, and save it. Download and install Foxit Reader Then, you need to download the Tour Permit Application Then, Make the changes to it and fill it out. Save it on your drive, then e-mail it to tourpermit@ppbsa.org
