Bataan Chapter - American Veterans for Equal Rights (in New Mexico)

New Mexico's Bataan Chapter of the American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER) provides support and recognition for gay veterans and current service members from all services, Active, Reserve and Guard, their families, friends and anyone who supports them whether or not they are gay in Central New Mexico.

Across America AVER and its chapters are dedicated to equal rights and treatment under the law for all gay, lesbian and bisexual service members and veterans of the active and reserve armed forces. Some of the activities of our Bataan Chapter in the high desert include:

Opportunities to regularly meet, socialize with and support some of the thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered veterans across our great state and country;

Service projects for our community and veterans at the New Mexico Veterans memorial in Albuquerque and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque;

Work with the National AVER for the right of current gay, lesbian and bisexual service members to serve our country safely and honorably and to be fairly and honorably recognized for their service in defense of America;

Join our straight brother's and sister's in arms publicly on Veteran's Day, Gay Pride Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day;

Obtaining Information and assistance to upgrade military discharges.

Proud History of Military Service

New Mexico has a long proud history of serving our country from the Civil War, as a territory, through the Bataan Death March in World War II to Afghanistan & Iraq. Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered & straight have all been an important part of that history. AVER is a valuable way to remember and continue that history in New Mexico. Several distinguished New Mexico gay veterans who have fought the Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue Policy nationally in recent years are members of the chapter.
