Red Hat Society
The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan.

ABQ Red Hot Tamales

If you believe there is fun after fifty come join our chapter of the Red Hat Society. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and, since we are all in it together, we might as well join hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next. To be a red-hatter, one must wear a red hat and a clashing purple ensemble at all meetings to keep up the spirit and purpose of the (dis)organization. Women under 50 must stick to the pink hat and lavender attire until THE BIRTHDAY. This adds an element of fun to aging, which we think is invaluable to women in our society who have learned to dread aging and avoid it at all costs. We believe that aging should be something anticipated with excitement, not something to dread.

Centenarian Celebrates Birthday on Harley

Jul 6, 11:43 AM (ET) By The Associated Press

STOUGHTON, Wis. (AP) - Ruth Stewart celebrated her 100th birthday by doing something she always wanted to try: Taking a ride on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. "If I were 20 years younger, I would buy one," said the retired music teacher. "I think they're just beautiful, but I never could afford it." Richard Ireland, 62, of Deerfield, gave Stewart a three-mile ride through downtown Stoughton after being contacted by Stewart's nieces and nephews. They wanted their aunt to realize her years-long dream of riding a Harley. Ireland drove her from her condominium to the Vennevol Clubhouse, where nearly 100 family members, friends, and Mayor Helen Johnson waited to celebrate with her. Her top speed Monday on the back of the Harley was 33 mph and she wanted to go faster. "It could have been a lot faster," she said. "Next time, when he comes back, I'll go 50. That will be fun."

ABQ Red Hot Tamale Motto

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!"
