TRUTH AND HONESTY

Truth and its Consequences

One of the phrases that most of us heard often when we were growing up was, "honesty is the best policy." Whether it was our parents, or our teachers, or even our peers, it seems that everyone was interested in knowing that they could trust what they were hearing from us.

Telling the truth is, indeed, very important. So many of us think that it is okay to "shade the truth," and then we wonder why no one believes us anymore.The Bible says "the Lord detests lying lips" (Proverbs 12:22).But there is another aspect of honesty that we need to consider -- living the truth! A popular book of several years back asked this question in its title, "Who Are You When Nobody is Looking?" Are you one person in public, but another person entirely when you think that you can "get away with it?" God calls for His people to be people of integrity - the same on the inside as they are on the outside.

God calls on us to speak the truth, and live the truth, so that those around us may come to know the Truth. The Bible tells us of the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

WHAT IS HONESTY?

Honesty means always speaking the truth. Honesty means not taking things that do not belong to us. Some people lie, cheat or steal to get away from difficult situations or people. When people do that and get caught they feel very ashamed. If they do not , they are scared of being found out and they feel guilty.

Being honest is truthful in thoughts, words and deeds. You have to think good thoughts, to say what you think and to do what you say. When thoughts, words and deeds become one, a person’s character becomes strong and unshakeable. A person who speaks the truth is trusted and loved by others. Everyone likes to be friends with a truthful person. But a person who lies slowly loses all his friends because nobody likes or trusts a person who lies.

Truth is simple. When we lie we have to worry about covering up one lie with another and another so people do not know we are lying. Being honest is saying it just the way it is.

Honesty and truthfulness gives us strength and peace. Deceit creates weakness and fear. Telling a lie weakens the mind because each time we lie, we get an uneasy, sick feeling inside us. When the truth is spoken the conscience and mind are together, they are in unison. That makes us strong inside and peaceful

CAN YOU BE TRUSTED?

Most ministers will urge you to trust the Saviour. Oddly enough, the Bible also puts it the other way. "But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men." In other words, there were certain people whom He could not trust.Yes, that is absolutely true of the whole situation.

Or more personally, can YOU be trusted? If not, you need radical heart surgery. You need a new heart, a heart that can be trusted. There's only One Who can give you that new heart?
