Americans for Informed Democracy presents Global Scholar 2008

at Washington and Lee University (Lexington, VA just outside Washington, DC). June 28 - July 12, 2008. Students will hear from more than 20 leaders at the forefront of international issues, have a chance to video-conference with their peers from around the world, visit leading global institutions such as the World Bank and devise policy responses to a hypothetical global crisis in an interactive simulation. ASA (Academic Study Associates)

offers College Admissions Prep summer programs for high school students (completing grades 10-11) at Tufts University (June 29 – July 1, 2008), Columbia University (June 29 – July 10/July 13 - 24, 2008) and U.C. California College of the Arts Pre-College Summer

offers a total immersion experience in the arts in a four-week program while earning 3 college credits. City College of New York

Cornell University Summer College 2008

– Explore the college experience through courses in architecture, business, art, communication, engineering, life sciences, writing, veterinary medicine and others. The CURIE Academy at Cornell University’s College of Engineering

is a one-week residential program designed for high school girls who excel in math and science, and who want to learn more about careers in engineering. Information and application forms are available at www.engineering.cornell.edu/curie. The program is for students who will be juniors and seniors next fall. Program dates: July 20 - 26, 2008. Deadline is April 15, 2007. Tuition is $650. Room board and other expenses will be covered by Cornell.

Girls Explorations in Mathametics and Science (GEMS) at Delaware State University

will engage 26 female students in an intensive 3-week exploration of mathematics, biology and information technology with research activities. This program is free to all participants. Program dates: July 13 – August 2, 2008. Applicants must have a B GPA, write a short essay and provide recommendation letters from two teachers. Harvard Summer School

offers The Drama Program, The Writing Program, the Math Program, the College Preparatory Program as well as an assortment of workshops and seminars in many academic disciplines. Ithaca Summer College for High School Students

Maryland Institute College of Art Summer 2008 Programs

is a studio residency program offering an unparalleled opportunity for students to experience firsthand the challenges and excitement of college-level art study. The program runs June 21 - July 19, 2008 and features a selection of core studio courses. Fees, including application fee, tuition, room and board is $3,950. Priority deadline is March 31, 2008; final deadline is April 21, 2008. Also, up to 25 full and partial scholarships are available for MICA’s Pre-College Studio Residency Program. The Math and Related Sciences (MARS) Camp

is a two-week residential, summer enrichment program for high school and middle school students. It is held under the direction of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) Department of Education. The camp is located on the UMES campus in Princess Anne, Maryland. MIT

Each summer approximately 75 high school students gather for six of the most stimulating weeks of their young lives. Selected from the United States and other nations, these students participate in a rigorous academic program which emphasizes advanced theory and research in mathematics, the sciences, and engineering. This is the Research Science Institute (RSI). Application deadline: February 8, 2008; admission decision: week of March 31, 2007. MIT SUMMER PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS – The Women's Technology Program

is a 4-week (June 28 through July 26, 2008) summer residence program to introduce high school girls to electrical engineering and computer science. If you know a girl who is currently a high school junior who demonstrates math and science ability and an interest in finding out about EECS, please encourage her to visit our website for more information and for an application form (applications are due Feb. 1, 2008). http://wtp.mit.edu/. Our classes are taught in a supportive environment by a staff of women MIT PhD candidates and undergraduates. The full-time academic program includes hands-on experiments and team-based projects in computer science, electrical engineering, and mathematics. No prior experience in computer programming, physics, or electrical engineering is expected, but applicants typically should have strong academic records, especially in math and science. The fee for this 4-week program is approximately $3,000 (which covers all costs). Financial aid is available. (Personal recommendation by BHS participant. offers programs for high school students in illustration, foundation drawing, computer art and design, oil painting, mixed media, photography, printmaking and sculpture. New York University Precollege

offers college-level courses in a variety of disciplines, a non-graded writing workshop, college admission planning and access to NYU’s facilities. June 30 - August 8, 2008. NYU Tisch School of the Arts Summer Programs 2008

July 9 - August 3, 2008. These programs offer intensive training in five performing and visual arts programs in New York and three programs abroad. Programs include drama, dramatic writing, film and television, photography and imaging, as well as programs in Dublin, Ireland and Paris, France. New York State Summer School of the Arts

The summer of 2008 will mark the 39th year of operation for the schools that form the New York State Summer School of the Arts. This program, with its eight component summer residential Schools is sponsored and supported by the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and is administered by the State Education Department. Recognized as one of the finest programs of its kind in the nation, over 14,000 high school age students have become part of this unique summer experience. Alumni surveys attest to the success of the schools in helping high school students with special talents identify and pursue career choices in all fields of the fine arts and performing arts at an early age. The Schools provide opportunities for all New York State students who qualify through auditions to receive the highest level of training and instruction. The eight Summer Schools of the Arts are directed and staffed by internationally acclaimed artists and companies such as the New York City Ballet and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Students work in small groups and in one-on-one sessions with professionals and with other students of similar ability. NYSSSA’s goal is clear: to provide intensive, pre-professional training programs for New York State’s most gifted and motivated young artists, those who are considering careers in the arts or entertainment industries. The schools provide intensive training in an environment where students experience the rigorous discipline of the daily life of a professional artist. Outward Bound

The Outward Bound program, founded in 1941 in Wales, has provided outdoor experiential education to students and adults in the Unisted States since 1961. Politics and Leadership

Spend a Summer Studying Politics and Leadership at One of Our Nation's Leading Universities...the Junior Statesmen Summer School offers a challenging, dynamic academic experience for students with a passion for politics and government. Each summer, 1500 outstanding high school students converge on the campuses of Stanford, Yale, Princeton and Georgetown Universities to immerse themselves in politics and debate. Princeton Summer Journalism Program

is a free, 10-day program held in August at Princeton University. Students take classes taught by writers from national publications, tour the New York Times and ABC News, meet with editors and producers, and report, write, edit, design, and produce a 12-page edition of the Daily Princetonian. To apply for the program, students must be entering the junior or senior year of high school in fall 2008, have a 3.5 GPA or higher, have an interest in journalism, and have a household income that does not exceed $45,000. San Francisco Institute of Art Young Artist Program

is a five-week summer arts program for students 16-18 (July 9 – August 10, 2008). Snow Farm High School Summer in Art 2008

is a hands-on, intensive summer in art where you can become a part of a small community of people connected by a common interest in creativity. Classes are small. Suffolk University Summer Institutes

Summer Study Programs (Penn State, University Of Colorado At Boulder & The American University Of Paris)

–Students who are interested can choose a summer study program at one of the above universities. Each university offers two programs (a 5 or 6½-week college-credit program or a 3-week enrichment program). Each campus offers students the use its sports and recreational facilities as well as myriad of activities (pottery, guitar, rock climbing, etc). Summer Scholars Program at Washington University in St. Louis

is a five-week program to students who have completed their Junior year of high school. The program requires a B+ academic average and combined SAT score of 1800, combined PSAT score of 180, or a composite ACT or PLAN of at least 25. There is some financial aid available. Courses include Languages, arts, sciences, humanities and social sciences. There are two sessions available: Session 1: June 8 - July 12 or Session 2: July 13 - August 15. Syracuse University Summer College for High School Students

STARTALK: a presidential initiative to fund summer programs in critical need languages: check the website for 2008 programs:

NFLC is undertaking the initial, planning phase of a multi-year project entitled "STARTALK" which is one of the projects of the National Security Language Initiative, a multi-agency effort to expand foreign language education - particularly in under-taught critical languages -- by funding new and existing programs throughout students' learning careers, kindergarten through university; and to provide incentives and rewards for foreign language learning and use in the work force. The Telluride Association

Summer programs at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY), Michigan State University (Ann Arbor, MI), University of Texas (Austin, TX) and Washington Universtiy (St. Louis, MO), are offered free of charge to qualifying students. Founded in 1911 by Lucien L. Nunn, Telluride Associatino is a nonprofit organization that creates and fosters educational communities that rely upon democratic participation. Telluride aims to foster an everyday synthesis of self-governance and intellectual inquiry that enables students to develop their potential for leadership and public service.
