About the "Alliance"
The Progressive Alliance for Humanity was originally founded out of frustration with the political situations in this country. A group of activists found themselves more and more disenchanted with the political agenda of both the right and the left. We found there were points to be made from both ends of the political spectrum and everything in between. So we became originally a think tank and a clearing house for ideas spanning the political spectrum. We also found that we needed a way to release some of the nervous energy that builds up doing that kind of work. To make a long story short we established the Budokan. and dedicated it to the serious study of Martial Arts ans Zen meditation. BUDOKAN-Warrior's Home

The word, Budokan, is actually three words in Japanese. The first word being "Bu" is usually translated as martial or warrior. In actuality it means "to stop a spear." In the classical sense the warrior was the one who stopped conflict, who protected the community. We say that "Bu" means warrior to simplify the meaning, to make it not so cumbersome. In doing so, we of the Martial Arts Community have been lax is some cases in explaining the real meaning of "Bu."

The word "Do" means "path" or "way"and in the martial arts it is used to connote a particular "way" to enlightenment.e.g Karate Do, is the way of the epty hand, Judo is the gentle way. If the word Jutsu were use instead of Do, we would be talking of empty hand techniques Karate jutsu, jujutsu. The techniqhe is the aim if the Jutsu. The aim of the Do is quite a bit more complex. We wll discuss it more later.

The word "Kan" means a place where practice and study takes place. The Budokan is a place for studying and practicing various Martial Arts, Warrior's ways. At present we have instruction in Karate-do, Iado, and Judo.

The Five Characeristics of American Goju-Kempo

American Goju-Kempo has two main martial arts at its core, one of them is Gojuryu Karate. The other is Shorin-ji Kempo. The following is based on ythe teaching of that art. As I believe is also classical Goju Karate.

The body and mind are one entity

THE FIRST CHARACTERISTIC OF AMERICAN GOJU-KEMPO

one of the pricipal characteristics of American Goju-Kempo is summed uo in the saying "The mind and the body are one entity" (ken zen ichinyo), this shows that the pempoka should emphasize neithe the physical or the spiritual training. Rathe that he/she should train and nourture both the body (ken) and the spirit (zen).

When the body is doing poorly, due to sickness or injury, your spirit tends to fall. No matter how thoroughly you may try to set your soul at peace, this will not stop the decline of the body into illness. This shows that the training of the body and the spirit are intertwined. It demonstrates the training of either must be the training of both as one.

Doshin So , the Founder of Shorin-ji Kempo, spoke of this concept not only as a matter of body and mind but as a concept meaning extending even to the relations of thought and action." Zen is a thing of the mind and heart*. However, the whole matter is founded upon the body's existence."

In Japan the heart is the home of the will and not as in the west the feelings.see the section on Kokoro.

 Shushu Koju

DON'T LOSE! This is the second characreristin of American Goju-Kempo.

American Goju-Kempo is an art of physical self-defence. An art to protect the body from an opponent with harmful intent. The firs tast is to protect yourself. Our objective is not to beat our opponents, but not to lose to them. This is "Shushu koju" defend first, attack later.

The Combat Art of American Goju-Kempo begins with the problem of the opponent's attack and defending against it. You block and deflect any punch kick or other strike that comes at you. When you are grabbed it is important to be able to protect yourself against any grppling attack without breaking stance. It is after all of this id done that you turn to the counterattack. The ideal situation ist to be able to defend and counterattack simultaneously.

You don't need to be a knoch out artist to be able to successfully defend yourself. You need to be able to repel the attack and if necessary launch a counterattack. Since AGK is an art of defense, it is not an art of winning and/or losing. AGK does not make knockout artists or killers. The world is full of tough guys , there's no need to make more. We make people who don't lose. It is not necessary to win in order to protect your body. What is important is that you don't lose. American Goju-Kempo will train you so that unarmed you can protect yourself. That is sufficient unto itself.

If you are confident in your ability to defend yourself physically in a dangerous situation then you will not give up. American Goju-Kempo teaches if you are not dead then there is still hope. Never Give Up ! This is Shushu koju.

Fusatsu Katsujin
This is the third characteristice of American Goju-Kempo. There is no need in most cases to kill or wound the opponent. It is enough to make him lose the will to fight or prevent him from aggressive action. To that point there are techniques that are designed to apply optimal force to various pressure and nerve points of the body and make the opponent immobile.

American Goju-Kempo does not subcribe to "one blow, certain death " as do many other empty hand forms of combat. It is not just a matter of overpowering the opponent with harmful intent . Most times the need to protect oneself fall far short of killing.

The word "win" does not mean winning as in competing and beating one's opponent. If you can dispute the other's wrong and convince him of it , that is victory. If you are studying a martial art to learn how to kill you are in the wrong place. There are much mor efficient ways of killing. The Combat Art of American Goju-Kempo is about living This is Fusatsu Katsujin

 Goju Ittai

The fourth characteristic of American Goju-Kempo

Hard and Soft in balance

The techniques of American Goju-Kempo are meant to be responsive to all kinds of situations. Genrally speaking you may divide them int "hard and "soft" methods. Goho (hard methods) center around punches, kicks and strikes. Juho (soft methods) are the escapes, joint locks, pressure and nerve pionts and chokes . With American Goju-Kempo goho and juho are used depending on the situation. you wou wouldn't want to us a goho technique when the situation clearly does not call for it. However if someone comes at you with a flurry of punches juho alone wouldn't be an adequate defence. Goho and Juho techniques are most often used together. What matters is that the kenshi has the abilti and the techniques to adapt as his attacker may change his style of attack. Hard and soft must be in harmony. Kime (focus) must be maintained.

This is Goju Ittai

Kumite Shutai : Sparring

The fifth characteristic of American Goju- Kempo

"Paired practice is primary"

This means that two people pair up and practice with the mutual goal of improving one's technique thour cooperating with each other. The re are two reasons we practice in pairs.

The first reason is technical. In solo practice you cannot learn timing and spacing that are necessary to overcome a moving opponent. american Goju-Kempo is comprised of defensive techniques that are based on overcoming your opponent when they make their attack. So one person plays the attacker while the other the defender. The role are traded off throughout practice. Without an attacker defence cannot be practiced. If you wish to become a bette kensh you must do paired practicing.

The second reason is based on the idea of building a cooperative relationship through practice. We don't compete for victory or defeat . We practice this way because it is in the nature of paired practice, Paired spractice seems to have originated at the Northern Shaolin Temple in China. This idea grew into a qhole approach to practice for one's development as a human being, Through the comradeship of each taking turns and applying techniques to the othe, you build up a trust through your own efforts, It also results in giving your partner a sense of trust in you. It is as a result of this kind of practice that we recognize that the self exists, but it reaffirms the existence of so many others different from ourselves. This is Kumite Shutai !
