CAMBA News
Soling One Meter racing for the 2008 is complete. Ted Smith is the club champion this year. Bob Fritze and Peter Meixner tied for second. The full results are posted in the 2008 Season Race Series.

After a long and heroic battle with leukemia, Phil Tiberio passed away in late October.

Phil had been a member of CAMBA for many years. Phil was the inspiration for the weekly "Phil's Cadillac."

The sailors of CAMBA will miss Phil.

CAMBA will be back on the pond at The Crossing when the ice is gone – probably the last week of April.

Please contact us if you are interesting in sailing with us in 2009.

Fall Series Results

Race Series Format

· We will have three 7 week race series, Spring, Summer and Fall.

· Within each seven week series two throw aways will be permitted.

· Trophies will be awarded to the winner of each series.

· The “Soling One Meter Perpetual Cup” will be awarded to the winner of the three combined series.

· Only members in good standing can win these CAMBA trophies

2008 Series Schedule

· The Spring Series starts Tuesday May 6, and ends Tuesday June 17.

· The Summer Series starts Tuesday July 8, and ends on Tuesday August 19.

· The Fall Series starts Tuesday September 9, and ends Tuesday October 21.

· The 2 – 3 weeks between the series provides a cushion for schedule postponements, and an opportunity to do some US One Meter Racing

Progressive Starts

This year, CAMBA is experimenting with progressive starts. The purpose of this is to allow the new sailor to experience the excitement of finishing well up in the fleet, and give the better sailors the challenge of sailing in fleet situations..

Briefly, the skippers are seeded into four groups, red, orange, yellow and green. The red group starts first. Then at twenty second intervals, the orange, yellow and green groups start.

The seedings are based on the 2007 race results. New or unseeded members start in the red group. A skipper winning two races in a day is promoted to the next higher group (eg. orange to yellow).

Race Recap - October 21, 2008

The weather improved after heavy showers in the morning and early afternoon. We sailed two races in light winds and were interrupted by a shower. The skies looked clear in the west. We stayed and the weather cleared. The wind was much better for the last four races. We had a nice sunset at the end of the day.

Dean Perry had a great day winning four of the six races.

Hank Bickel won Phil's Cadillac for the second week in a row.

Bill Morris only raced the first race. The final standing for the Fall Race Series was won by Ted Smith, Peter Meixner was second with Hank Bickel finishing third.

Race Recap / News - October 14, 2008

Only six skippers sailed Tuesday. The wind was excellent, about 10 mph at the airport gusting to about 20 mph. We started sailing at 3:30 and we had finished our six races by 5:00.

The results are summarized below. Hank Bickel won the 4th race and the rights to Phil's Caddy for the week. This is the 4th time Hank has won the Caddy this year.

When the official racing was done we did some "fun" racing. The course was the Magellan - twice around. We sailed two of these "fun" races before we quit sailing at about 5:30.

We adjourned to the Red Lobster for the Dutch treat dinner. We discussed a bit of business for next year. The first item was the progressive starts. All agreed that next year (2009) we should revert to a conventional single start. The feeling was that the progressive start was helpful, especially with so many new sailors. If we have another big influx of new sailors, we should consider an A & B fleet concept. Reverting to the conventional single start will have to be ratified at the annual spring meeting.

A second idea that was deemed desirable was to start our Tuesday sailing earlier in the afternoon. This is OK if you are retired. The down side of this is that sailors still working will find it even less convenient to sail. This too will have to be ratified at the annual spring meeting. As a personal observation, I would like to find a sailing format that is more amenable for the non-retired. Nothing seems to resonate so far.

Next Tuesday 10/21 is the seventh and final race day of the Fall Series. Hank Bickel and Peter Meixner will be running the racing, and distributing trophies and awards for the Fall Series and the 2008 season.

Racing after 10/21 will be on a week by week basis. Ted Smith and Bill Morris be pulling the buoys some time in November, probably Tuesday November 11.

Race Recap / News - October 7, 2008

There were nine Solings racing Tuesday. The wind was very light, and sailing was a challenge. We only managed to sail three races in two hours. The Third race was for Phil's Caddy. Ted won the Phil' Cadallac race.

Luck, namely being in the right place at the right time played a significant role in finishing well. Even though the conditions were difficult, there were some very close finishes.

Goeffrey Bullard was sailing his new Soling. The boat looks good, and showed speed when the wind was a bit stronger. Geoffrey was awarded the third place trophy for the Summer Series. Prize Master Fred Cullen awarded the trophy. Congratulations Geoffrey.

Bill Daley and Lee Zimmer each had problem with their boats and were unable to start or finish most races.

Race Recap / News - September 30, 2008

Sailing was very nice on Tuesday. The winds were strong and mostly consistent.

Fred Cullen topped the standing this week. Congratulations Fred.

Both Bill Morris and Lee Zimmer were promoted to a higher seed for winning two races. Bill to the Orannge and Lee to the Green. Nice work guys.

Peter Meixner won the Phil's Cadillac trophy this week.

Before the Soling racing, Bob Fritze and Lee Zimmer showed off ther Footys.

We had some trouble with the CD player. Bill Morris called his wife and she brought over a huge boom box which Bill got to work before the races stated. Thanks Bill.

Race Recap / News - September 23, 2008

There were ten sailors at The Crossings. Of the then, eight raced. Bob Fritze was tuning his US 12 Meter for a regatta in a couple of weeks. In addition, we were joined by George Plummer. George was sailing a beautiful wooden Chesapeake Bay skiff. We hope George decides to join us again in the future.

The sailing conditions were not ideal. The airport was reporting wind in the 4 - 5 mph range. We managed to sail five races before we stopped sailing. The last race turned out to be an exercise in controlled drifting. The highlight of the afternoon was Bill Morris winning his second race ever! That race was also for Phil's Caddy. Congratulations Bill!

Prize Master Fred Cullen made the trophy awards for the Summer Season:
  • Ted Smith, First
  • Bob Fritze, Second
  • Goeffrey Bullard, Third.
We had a short business meeting.

Hank Bickel and Peter Meixner will coordinate sailing next Tuesday, September 30.

We decided that we would sail all seven days of the Fall Series, ending on Tuesday, October 21.
However, the Dutch Treat Banquet will be after racing on Tuesday, October 14.

Bob Fritze reported that his "team" won first place in the regatta in Worchester Mass. this past weekend. Kudos to Bob and his team mates!!

Bob also mentioned that he had been approached to find out if CAMBA would be willing to participate in a Quadricentennial celebration in the Hudson area next July. I think it is a super idea, and Bob should pursue it to see how it develops.

Race Recap / News - September 16, 2008

We had seven boats sailing on Tuesday. The breeze was better than forecasted and the sailing was generally good.. The wind at the airport was 4 - 8 mph.

The 5th race was for Phil's Caddy and was won by Ted Smith.

Ted also won the finished first in week 2 of the Fall Series.

This coming Sunday, September 21 is the Colonie Fall Festival at The Crossings. CAMBA is scheduled to sail the Alec Brown Regatta. Kevin Morgan will reserve a picnic table for us. Consider this to be a BYO picnic - Bring food to share with others. I hope we have a big turn out.
  • Start Racing a 1:30 PM
  • Race 5 races - one throw away.
  • Common start, rather than the progressive start.
  • Sailing Exhibition - One of the objectives of the 21st is to do our sailing thing in front of an audience. If you have an extra boat or any class, and are willing to let some one use it please bring it.
  • Other Boats - Not all the spectators are interested in sailing. If you have a power boat that you would be willing to let some one use, please bring it. The young children seemed to enjoy running the club tug.
If you are planning on coming, please be aware that parking becomes difficult as the afternoon progresses.
Club Member Bob Fritze is headed for the "bigs." He will be sailing his Soling in a regatta in Worchester Mass this Sunday. We all hope Bob sails well and brings home some hardware.
