The Commandments of Pet Ownership
adapted from various versions available online.
  • When you adopt me my life is likely to last 15 to 20 years. Please don't forsake me; any separation from you will be very painful.

  • Please give me time to understand what it is you want from me. Change can be more difficult for me than for you, your patience will teach me more effectively.

  • Please have me spayed or neutered so we do not contribute to the homeless pet overpopulation problem.

  • Please trust me and help me to trust you... it is crucial for my well-being as well as yours.

  • Don't be angry with me for too long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, and your entertainment. All I have is YOU and no heart in all the world is more grateful for your kindness than mine.

  • Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when you're speaking to me.

  • Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget.

  • Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Is there another reason for my behavior? Try to understand what it is like to be me.

  • Please take care of me when I get old. Don't abandon me, for you, too, will grow old. Remember, no matter what, that I love you.

  • On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Don't make me face it alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so. ALWAYS!

Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful thing without God’s critters. They ask for little more than food, water, shelter, but most of all LOVE and isn't that what we all want?
