The Quilt Maker’s Gift
by Jeff Brumbeau
This story is about a quilt maker who works hard every day to sew the most beautiful and magical quilts. At night she goes down to the town and gives her quilts away to the poor and homeless.
Not far from the quilt maker, lives a powerful and greedy king who loved receiving gifts. He would send his soldiers out to find him the rarest treasures from around the world. Soon his castle was filled with many treasures but they did not make the king happy.
One day a soldier comes back and tells the king about the quilt maker and her beautiful quilts. The king demands to have one of these quilts in hopes that it will make him happy. The quilt maker however, refuses to give the king a quilt because her quilts were for the poor. She promises the king that she will make him a quilt if he gives away all of his treasures.
For many days the king refuses to give his things away until he finally finds a small marble that he gives to a young boy. The boy is so happy to receive the marble that the king decides he can give some more treasures away. Soon the king begins giving everything he owns away and comes to find that it makes him happy.
When the king no longer has anything but the clothes on his back, the quilt maker gives him his quilt. The king comes to realize that even though he looked poor he felt rich in his heart because of all the happiness he brought to others.
