Book of the Month-Babushka’s Doll Babushka’s Doll
By: Patricia Polacco
In the story Babushka’s Doll, by Patricia Polacco, a selfish girl named Natasha bosses her Babushka around. Natasha isn’t truly naughty, however, she is extremely demanding. When she wants something, she wants it now!
Babushka has chores to finish and it becomes hard for her to do her chores when Natasha wants all of Babushka’s attention to herself. Babushka gets tired of Natasha’s attitude and decides to go to the market leaving Natasha with a “special” doll of hers to play with. Natasha learns a very valuable lesson from playing with her grandmother’s “special” doll. The author’s message to the reader is to treat others the way that you want to be treated. It is important to be respectful to your elders and learn to have patience. The illustrations in this book do an excellent job supporting the lessons the author is trying to convey to the reader. Written by: The Book of the Month Club
The Book of the Month Club is an after school enrichment open to 4th grade students that have an interest in literature. Club members review and discuss character related books ultimately creating a list of titles that will be used for the 2010/11 school year. Students may also have the opportunity to write reviews for books that will be presented in this PTA monthly packet. The club is made available to students through the dedication of our teachers, Mrs. Bonagura and Ms. VanBuskirk. Keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks.
Last year’s 4th grade club members chose the book You are Special, written by Max Lucado.
Every student in our school will be introduced to The Book of the Month choices in their classroom and library throughout the year. They enjoy the program very much.
