FINGER LAKES CHAPTER NEWSLETTER July 2009
WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOT Tribute:
"You and more than 900 of your sisters have shown that you can fly wingtip to wingtip with your brothers. If ever there was any doubt in anyone's mind that women can become skillful pilots, the WASP have dispelled that doubt. I want to stress how valuable I believe the whole WASP program has been for the country. . .We . . .know that you can handle our latest fighters, our heaviest bombers; we. . . know that you are capable of ferrying, target towing, flying training, test flying, and the countless other activities which you have proved you can do. So, on this last graduation day, I salute you and all WASP. We of the Army Air Force are proud of you, we will never forget our debt to you."
Hap Arnold, Commanding General, USAF Last Graduation of WASP, 1944 (99s Network - July 5,2009)
On July 1, President Barack Obama signed into law the bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II.
You can see three photos of the signing ceremony at the Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse and go to the page for July 1 photos and comments.

WE HAVE A WINNER In June, Central New York Chapter had their annual Spot Landing/Flour Bombing contest at Whitford’s Airport, Weedsport, NY. Our very own Frances Englund, incoming chapter chair, took 4th place at 90 ft. in the spot landing. Frances was awarded 20 gallons of 100 LL. Not a bad prize! First place went to Michael Cahill of Baldwinsville, NY at 14 ft. for a prize of $99.
CAROLANN GARRATT
On June 27, 2009 CarolAnn Garratt came to Rochester International Airport to talk about her recent dash around the world in 8 days,12 hours and 20 minutes in a Mooney. She set a new world record, and raised awareness for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Marcia Gitelman, Janet Sarbou, and Sandy Brown were able to attend.
CarolAnn has written two books - Upon Silver Wings: Global Adventure in a Small Plane and Upon Silver Wings II: World Record Adventure. CarolAnn puts you right in the cockpit with her - it is a great read! The books can be purchased by one of the following ways. All proceeds go to ALS-TDF.
a. Telephone: 617-441-7270, please have your credit card ready.
b. Sending a minimum contribution of $25 ($35 for autographed copy). Make check payable to ALD-TDF and mail to 215 First St., Cambridge, MA 02142. Attn: J. Oken on the envelope and Silver Wings in the memo section of your check.
c. Amazon.com. When you buy from Amazon.com 15% of the list price goes to Amazon as commission and the remainder, minus shipping and handling, goes to ALS-TDF. These purchases are not tax deductible.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis-Therapy Development Foundation is a nonprofit biotechnology company focused on finding treatments and a cure for today’s ALS patients. There are an estimated 30,000 ALS patients in the US today with over 5,600 new patients diagnosed each year. Statistically, someone you know will contract ALS in the next 10 years.
Please note that contributions made directly to the ALS Therapy Development Foundation in excess of $25 will be tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
FORMER 99 GETS HER MAN!
On June 28, 2009, former chapter member Martha Anne Hull became the wife of Robert Pickard, a corporate pilot for Seneca Foods. It was a beautiful ceremony. Her daughters Sara and Leslie were junior bridesmaids. The groom played his guitar and sang two solo love songs to his bride at the end of the ceremony.

CHAIR CHATTER
This will be my last newsletter. On August 1, 2009 we will have a new chapter chair - Frances Englund. It has been a pleasure to have served our chapter in this capacity. I have learned a lot in these past 4 years.
There are things I wish we could have done, but our diverse geographic locations and my former work schedule made it too difficult. We have, however, revised our bylaws, finished the Blanche Stuart Scott project, hosted a section meeting, done several Rochester Wings programs and had some great lunch meetings. Not bad for 4 short years. Thank you for your support!!
Sandy
