4) One Brother's Response to the Media about the WTC and Muslims _ Juan Galvan

Recently, a friend responded to a news article that angered him. My friend forwarded me the e-mail that she wrote to him. Certain statements she made in the e-mail bothered me. Although she wrote that she hoped to bring to light the true Islam, I wondered how she could possibly do so when she didn’t know the true Islam. Most Muslims aren’t Arabs. Islam is against terrorism. Muslims want to see justice. First, she implied that all Muslims are Arabs. This horrible tragedy in New York has angered many Americans. Truly many Americans do not know anything about Muslims. In fact, we should warn the Sikh community that crazy people are after the wrong target. Perhaps, Americans could boycott Arab businesses. Perhaps, Americans could try whatever means to scare Arabs. Unfortunately, Arab Muslims make up between 18% to 25% of the entire Muslim population. The other day there was TV subcaption read something like "Arab family" for a Pakistani family. I am a Muslim. I am Mexican-American. I don’t dress like an Arab. Does that make me any better than those Arabs? Second, she wrote, "People only bring in a person's religion if it informs what they do." Those people who did this were Muslim, but the do not represent the entire Muslim population. My sister said something to the extent of, "Your Muslim leader what’s his name said he's gonna start a holy war on the US." My parents wondered what I had gotten myself into. So you see, we Muslims tend to get angry when the media characterizes us as a bunch of uncivilized, terrorists. Third, she wrote, "If Joyce Meyer was bombing buildings because her religion said to do so, wouldn't we call her a Christian extremist?" Islam does not say to bomb buildings. Indeed, Islam condemns suicide all together. Even the Qur’an states that when someone dies, it's as if the entire community has died. Bin Laden is not the spokesman for Islam. I also wish that the media wasn't the primary median through which people learn about Islam. Indeed, she would be called a Christian extremist. Although we hear of the "Christian Right" called right-wing fanatics, we never hear of left-wing fanatics. The word "atheist fanatic" just doesn't sound catchy enough for the media. When a Muslim murders someone, all of Islam goes on trial. When an atheist murders someone, no one cares. He simply doesn’t get associated with any cause. Yet most imprisoned people either are atheist or are not very religious. We single out people who are religious. We believe that they should be better than we should be. We think they are no longer humans. We put them on a pedestal. We wait for them to fall. Then we rejoice proclaiming, "Yes, I knew he was a hypocrite! See I told you." Her statement that angered me the most was "When terrorists carry Qur'ans with them in their rental cars on the way to ram airplanes into skyscrapers, it is irresponsible for journalists not to mention the factors that led up to this." Again, the factors she was referring to is ISLAM. Why not mention why Afghanistan and Bin Laden are angry? Their aims are political hidden behind the religion of Islam. Yet America likes to believe that Afghanistan was perfect before the Taliban. America definitely could use a history lesson. Muslims are taught to understand before condemning. She also wrote that Muslim countries were unappreciative to the US for their role in expelling Iraq from Kuwait. Many Muslim countries were behind the US when Kuwait was invaded. Indeed, Islam is the religion that seeks peace. Of course, Muslims get angry when they think about the millions of children that have died since the imposition of sanctions against Iraq. Maybe for Americans, those Iraqi people deserve it. Maybe you can't understand the big deal. "They are way over there in the desert or jungle, and they are barbarians anyway," the media seems to say. For Muslims, those "barbarians" around the world are our brothers and sisters. We want to see that who gets the punishment is he that deserves the punishment.
