1/2-Column Section (2A)
BACKGROUND For the better Part of the last decade of the last century of the second millennium, a violent, savage and barbaric civil conflict: war has been raging in once one of the most peaceful nation and country in Africa, Sierra Leone. Ostensibly, the war erupted due to the discontentment over the plundering of the country's rich mineral resources. But the heart of the matter is the general disenchantment with the socio-economic and political malaise of three decades of bad governance, which resulted in slow infrastructural development, decline in production and incomes, with the subsequent poverty and consequent mass exodus to the urban and mining areas; poor health and educational facilities; the decline in employment opportunities, systematic corruption, nepotism, mal administration of justice etc. The civil war, lasting nearly a decade has been characterised by a bewildering degree of cruelty and inhumanity committed largely against the civilian population; including an unprecedented degree of human rights abuses. The death toll and the displacement of the population have been considerably high. There has been massive destruction of the economic and social infrastructure and of towns and villages without any exception for schools, hospital, health centres, sacred historic, cultural sites, churches and mosques, farms, mining installations and water supply systems, the environment. Another aspect of the war is the prevalence of child and adolescent fighters. In addition to that, children have suffered immeasurably as persons uprooted from their immediate families, communities and as victims of hardship: they have been abducted, sexually abused, trained for combat and denied education . The consequence is that, the social fabrics of society, including the traditional family structures have been either destroyed or drastically weakened . The magnitude of the task of material reconstruction and resettlement of refugees and Internally Displaced persons (IDPs) is monumental. But as difficult as this task may be, social reintegration of communities torn by war is the essential challenge facing Sierra Leoneans in the transition from war to peace. We hereby refer to this as the process of community resettlement that aims at the creation of adequate economic and social conditions, the promotion of prejudice reduction and basic acceptance, identification of areas of common needs and co-operation allowing us to work as community again. It is against this background and in support of that process that Masianday Peace Foundation was established.
