![]() The MLYC has been racing model sail boats on Mirror lake for 25 years. The boats that have been sailed are replicas of full size yachts that have sailed in Olympic competition. Presently we are using the Soling One Meter Class that are available in kits. This boat provides a low-cost one-design model suitable for introducing newcomers to the hobby, while offering enough performance to keep long-time model sailors interested. The club members meet at the lake every Wednesday and Saturday at 9 a.m. and racing starts at 9:30 a.m. Racing involves using a timed start to complete a pre-determined course. The object is to get to and round a series of buoys or marks ahead of the other boats. After completing the course each boat is recorded in the order of finish. In late February and early March a Regatta is held to determine the name to be added to the Commodore’s Perpetual Trophy in Busch Hall. Spectators, guests and newcomers are all welcome. If you want to visit us at Mirror Lake, please use caution around the golfers when getting to and returning from the lake. History When Mirror Lake was first built there were frustrated sailors who sailed board boats, sailing canoes, model cruisers and sailboats on the lake. In the 1983-84 season Stuart Orton built the first thirty-inch model Star Class boat that was free-sailing and named T.R. Lady; once launched, she could not be controlled from shore. There was considerable interest and after clearing with management, an organizational meeting was held that formed the Mirror Lake Yacht Club. Kits were ordered with radio controls and building was completed over the summer. Ten boats were in competition for the 1984-85 season. Stuart Orton was the Commodore for the first few years. Stan Barnes succeeded Orton and was Commodore until 2001. Yes, a Ladies Day annual event was started in 1994 and was held for a few years. In 1999 Stan introduced the Soling One Meter Class to the club and by 2005 it had become the standard for competing. In 1988 the club added a memorial flag pole and plaque to the Memorial Park at Mirror Lake to honor its members who have died. A new dock was installed in 2007 and a Lighthouse was built by members and added in 2008. Over the 25 years nearly 100 sailors have joined the club. Ken Klauss had the longest sailing record at 22 years. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
