Yacht club overview

The Travelers Rest Yacht Club members build and race the Soling 1 meter yachts beginning each December, concluding late March with a club champion being named at the annual season banquet dinner.

The club is directed by the Commodore with races conducted under the rules as documented and enforced by the racing committee. This committee of 4 members is refreshed annually with the addition of a new member and the retirement of the oldest serving member. The current committee and Commodore accept member volunteer requests to serve on the committee and make the selection of the new member.

Race Rules and “spirit” of competition

While the club wishes to conduct races under the rules of the American Model Yacht Association (AMYA), it also recognizes the membership is largely made up of retirees that desire to enjoy the competitive sport of RC sailboat racing, while keeping it simple, fair and especially fun for all participants. Therefore, strict adherence to many AMYA rules are not enforced, but continued, flagrant rule violations will be handled by the race committee on an “as needed” basis. The committee asks the members to especially comply with the following:

1 Do not cross the starting line before the official start is called. If recalled, keep clear of all yachts that have started then return around either end of the line. You have no rights until started properly.

2 Observe each buoy as marked on the given race course and if a buoy is missed, the yacht must go back the way the buoy was missed and then round the buoy correctly.

3 Observe the “right-of-way” of starboard tacking yachts if possible without colliding with other yachts.

4 Avoid collisions at all costs regardless of who has the right-of-way.

5 Be aware of your yacht, and others around you, racing fairly and cleanly.

6 After completing your race, stay clear of the finish line to allow remaining yachts to finish without interference.

7 Comply with other rules as may be communicated by the race committee.

Race format The yacht club meets at Mirror Lake every Wednesday and Saturday at 9 AM, with racing beginning at 9:30. The yachts will be divided into fleets if more than 10 yachts are racing that day. A minimum of 4 yachts racing is required for scoring. The best 5 out of 6 races is recorded and scored each racing day. Low score wins.

A yacht must race 50% of the total races in a series to receive a series score. Each series winner(s) is(are) promoted to the Gold fleet as specified in “Series Races” paragraph for regatta racing in March. Tie breaker rules shall be used when necessary.

Series Races

Fall Series - December 2 thru December 30 - 9 race days. 1st place to Gold fleet

Mid-Winter Series - January 2 thru January 30 - 9 race days. 1st & 2nd to Gold fleet

Winter Series - February 3 thru February 17 - 5 race days 1st, 2nd & 3rd to Gold fleet

There are now 6 yachts in Gold fleet. The final 4 yachts will be determined by the Match Races and Qualifier Races.

Match Racing Day Saturday, February 20

Each yacht will be paired with one other yacht for all races. When a yacht has lost 2 races, it is out of the competition. The final 3 yachts remaining will race until only one yacht remains to decide the Match champion. These three finalist yachts will advance to the Gold fleet.

Qualifying Races Wed. February 24 Sat. February 27 Wed. March 3

There will be 6 races per day (three day total of 18 races). The best 10 out of the 18 races shall be added. The low score(s) win. The top one, two, three or four yachts with the lowest score will advance to Gold status. The number of yachts advancing is dependant on how many yachts advanced from the Match race. If Qualifying races can only be held for two days, then the best 10 out of 12 races will be counted. Such a Qualifying Series shall be deemed a complete series to determine which yachts advance to the Gold fleet. Tie breaker rules may apply. If a Gold fleet skipper cannot race in the Regatta, then the lowest scoring yachts of the Qualifying races will advance to the Gold fleet to fill the 10 yacht fleet. The Gold fleet yachts will practice race in their own fleet.

Regatta (3 days) - Sat. March 6 Wed. March 10 Sat. March 13

There will be 6 races per day (three day total of 18 races). The best 10 out of the 18 races shall be added. The low score wins the club championship. If regatta can only be held for two days, then the best 10 out of 12 races will be counted. Such a regatta shall be deemed a complete regatta to determine the club champion. Tie breaker rules may apply.

Banquet On (or around) Mon. March 15 This is usually the week of March 15, held at Beef O’Brady’s in Dade City
