Apple Fest Report 2009 Apple Fest Report 2009 Again this year we peeled the apples on our meeting night. We had 17 members. Connie and I picked up pizza that was purchased by the Chapter at 5:50. We had 2 peelers working already. We ate, peeled apples and had 4 bushels done in 1 hour. We had many problems with peelers. I threw 2 right into the garbage. I will purchase new for inventory. We had a short meeting. We loaded the apples in vehicles and delivered them to the church. I had delivered the groceries earlier as the weather wasn’t looking that great. (Groceries were purchased 9/2 by Bob and I as we were going to be gone for 2 weeks just prior to Apple Fest) Glad that I did as it was raining. Many hands make light work! I got to the church by 5:15 (Thursday) after purchasing the milk from the Xtra Mart. I started the sauce. Yvonne arrived at 5:45 and we started getting out bowls and ingredients. We had the smallest group ever of 10. The first full oven load went in at 8:10 (10 pans of 15). We had 71 ½ sheet pans left from last year and used them as well as 15 full sheets. I had bought two 10 packs of full sheets when I bought groceries. We were done making at 11:45, done baking at 1:15. Connie and I walked out the door at 2:00. All dumplings were covered and in bread racks. We made 888. This year I requested for my bread man to bring me some racks and a ‘roller’. These were very clean and dry! Next year I will request 30 racks and 3 rollers. They are a bit more difficult to stack after we are done but it was nice to have clean! He even brought them into the church. Friday we took the first load to the Ball Flats (tent, grills, tables, LP, sign etc). Connie, Dennis and Mom were there to help. We unloaded then off to the church to get the dumplings. It was great to have so many hands to set up the tent. Frances came during the second time of getting the frame right. Bob had been sick all week and had a brain fade. Many hands do make it easier to set this tent. Saturday morning was foggy and a cool 49. There was no reason to be on the field before 7. Dennis, Frances and Bob got the tables and grills set up. This year we are working with only 2 grills. The first pan was put in at 8:15 to start warming. If it weren’t for parking and making sure that we don’t get the trailer blocked in we wouldn’t need to be so early. The cooker base works great for getting the sauce warm before putting it in the electric oven. We used the new containers (DART 16MJ32) with lids. If the dumplings aren’t too big they are better than the clam shells. We only use a cash box and that is working well. There was about 5 gallons of sauce and Bob had to make 2 more batches. We really could have used 1 more batch, but I didn’t have enough margarine on the field. NOTE: for next year make sure to have more sauce! Changing the price to 3.00 each this year was a help with quarters! Last Dumpling sold at 1:26, but it’s not over yet. We had a great tear-down crew, well; it was about the same crew that was there all day. The bread racks needed to go back to the church and the restaurant before anything else, so off they went. The rest of us picked up, tore down tables and got the tent down. Bob got back with the truck and that was loaded with the tent. After the trailer was loaded we hooked up. I think it was about 2:45 when all was done on the ballflats. Bob and I still have to wash the towels, utensils, oven and the rest. Inventory has to be taken care of and money counted. Please remember to put the last Saturday of September on your calendar for next year, as well as the Thursday prior. This is our only fund raiser and we need all the help we can get!
