CAMPUS NEWS ~ Dear Members of the Order of the Eastern Star, December is always a special time of the year, but this year it was very special at your Campus in Oriskany. During the week before Christmas, I received a letter in the mail; one which I will likely never forget, not necessarily because of the magnitude of the gift, but because of the meaning that went into it. The letter reads as follows: Dear Jeff, The work you are doing at our OES Home is simply terrific, and is surely appreciated by all of the members. The presentation you gave at Grand Chapter was outstanding and it made a deep and lasting impression on me especially since I hope to become a resident of the home at some point in my life. I know it will take a great deal of money to accomplish your goals of providing private rooms for all the residents, and I am sure the various Districts will give you full support. I also want to help out and I am enclosing a check for $5,000 toward this outstanding goal. You can consider this a down payment, for I will be going to the Home when I feel I can no longer keep up my home… “Keep a light on for me.” The donor wishes to remain anonymous; but for those of you who know this individual, an act of kindness like this would be of no surprise. You see, it’s not the amount of the gift that impressed me. It’s the point that we have not formally initiated a campaign which will be forthcoming to allow for all Chapters and Districts and even individuals to participate in the opportunity to invest in the improvement of another person’s quality of life. This member saw a need and acted upon that need; that is why she is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and profoundly understands the principle of “Charity”. What a glorious example for all of us to follow, and as we approached the darkest day of the year, we not only saw the “Light of Him, whose Star we have Seen in the East” but the “light” of one of our own members who will illuminate our future and that of all whom we care for. And yes, to the person who sent the letter and all who are reading this, “We Will Keep the Light on for You”. May God Bless You and the Order of the Eastern Star. Fraternally, Jeffrey S. French Administrator and “Keeper of the Light” ARE YOU STILL SEARCHING FOR JUST THE RIGHT GIFT FOR A FELLOW O.E.S. MEMBER? CHECK OUT THE FOLLOWING. “A CENTURY OF CARE” Authored by Donna Laundry, Susan Hall and Jean LaFave, is our newly published book describing the nearly 100-year history of our Eastern Star Nursing Home, including the evolution of our Eastern Star Home, up to and including the wonderful campus we are so proud of today. If you were unable to attend Grand Chapter Sessions or would like to purchase additional copies, they are still available. They may be purchased at our Gift Shop at the Eastern Star Home for $8.00 per book. You may also purchase the book by sending a check payable to Jean LaFave in the amount of $10.00. ($8.00 for the book plus $2.00 for postage. Jean’s address is: 109 Ravenswood Drive, Liverpool, New York 13090.
