Cubmaster's Corner This is his spot to share his thoughts, ideas and words of wisdom.
Within My Power - by Forest WhitcraftFrom Scouting magazine, October 1950
I am not a Very Important Man, as importance is commonly rated. I do not have great wealth, control a big business, or occupy a position of great honor or authority.
Yet I may someday mold destiny. For it is within my power to become the most important man in the world in the life of a boy. And every boy is a potential atom bomb in human history.
A humble citizen like myself might have been the Scoutmaster of a Troop in which an undersized unhappy Austrian lad by the name of Adolph might have found a joyous boyhood, full of the ideals of brotherhood, goodwill, and kindness. And the world would have been different.
A humble citizen like myself might have been the organizer of a Scout Troop in which a Russian boy called Joe might have learned the lessons of democratic cooperation.
These men would never have known that they had averted world tragedy, yet actually they would have been among the most important men who ever lived.
All about me are boys. They are the makers of history, the builders of tomorrow. If I can have some part in guiding them up the trails of Scouting, on to the high road of noble character and constructive citizenship, I may prove to be the most important man in their lives, the most important man in my community.
A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life of a boy.
"Excitement" is the word I think fits best! Last week several of us attended our Council's Program Kickoff, and found out about new programs, the new district, and all sorts of cool things. In fact they announced that the western district is now named the Seneca District, which is great for bunches of reasons... I guess that will be another blog!
The other reason for excitement is I have been working on next year's theme and program... and when it is shared I hope you go, "WOW! All the ideas and outings and overnights!" I read this on another web site and thought it would be good to include.
A helpful chart from BSA that shows the recommended beginning and ending points of each level of the Cub Scout program. Tigers (first graders), Wolfs (second graders), and Bears (third graders) each begin their respective program years on June 1st. First-year Webelos Scouts (fourth graders) also begin on June 1st. They become second-year Webelos Scouts (fifth graders) the following June. Second-year Webelos Scouts should graduate from the Cub Scout pack in February and begin meeting with their new Boy Scout troop in March.
My fondest memories of a Cubmaster take me back to Pack 41 in Utica NY in what was the Land of the Oneidas Council. Now granted I was a little bias as he was also my Den Leader but this is the image that comes to my head, when I hear the word Cubmaster: Mr. Hugg.
Often when you ask a student who their heroes are they will mention athletes, movie stars, musical artists and many more. I think back, and Mr. Hugg was one of my first heroes. I was honored when he came and attended my Eagle Banquet. It doesn’t sound like much, but we moved after my 2nd grade year, and almost 10 years later he drove almost 2 hours to be there, and he was proud.
Mr. Hugg if nothing else was the lifeblood of our Pack, he was always jovial, way organized and always ready to help. From showing us how to break down a derby to inspiring us to try anything our hearts desired. He pushed us, yet supported us and made us fall in love with scouting. I think he was the first one who thought I could be an Eagle.
If, as a Cubmaster I can do just a fraction of what Mr. Hugg did for Pack 41, and I can do for our youth just a portion of what Mr. Hugg did for me, than I will be a success. I have this desire to pass on all that I have learned but as I think back; what a journey it is, one I cannot wait to begin!
Scout on!
I am honored, to have been asked to be Cubmaster. I am even more blessed to be able to follow in the footsteps of Mr. Holvey. What he has done for the boys and the community of Macedon may take years to recognize but the impact is clear. As a leader, he has created memories, opportunities and made many of us very proud.
Luckily he is staying around so we can continue to learn from him!
I hope this will be a place to share memories and experiences we will have together on this journey of Cub Scouting.
Scout On!
