  Scouting for Food

Scouting for food was another great success this year. The weather (mostly) cooperated, and we had a fantastic turnout: 38 boys, 18 registered leaders, plus around a dozen girl scouts and brownies, and many more parents and siblings, PLUS nearly all of the boys from Troop 166!

We covered every part of Macedon that we had planned to hit, and even though folks were understandably a bit less inclined to give this year, we still brought in a great deal of food - over 60 boxes.

Thanks again to everyone for coming out in force. This is our biggest community service event of the year, and thanks to all of the boys' hard work, many families in our community will be a little less hungry this holiday season.

Between all the volunteers we had donated their time, we logged 276 service hours and have recorded it on the Good Turn for America website. Good Turn for America is a national call to service by the Boy Scouts of America to address the issues of hunger, homelessness, and poor health in our nation. Meeting the substantial needs of every community is dependent on its citizens to answer the call of volunteerism. There is a natural fit between the Boy Scouts of America and other community organizations. Service learning is an integral part of the Scouting program. As a result, youth and adults seek opportunities to volunteer. Community organizations need volunteers to help them fulfill their missions. Working with these organizations creates a win/win situation for everyone.

TO BOY SCOUT TROOPS 166 & 167
and CUB SCOUT PACKS 166 & 167

The Social Ministry Committee of St. Patrick's would like to thank all you Boys Scouts and Cub Scouts, your leaders, parents and volunteers for the tremendous donation of food from your Scouting For Food Drive of November 8th. You are to be commended for this great community service. We are grateful for all the effort put forth by everyone involved who literally collected, sorted and boxed 226 boxes of food donated to is on this drive. I think the Scouting for Food signs located throughout the community certainly helped. We were so happy to receive this food. Already we are seeing many more families coming to the food pantry for help every week. The last Wednesday that I worked the food pantry, 16 families came for help. This large donation will fill our food cupboard shelves for many months to come and will help fill the Christmas food boxes that are delivered to the needy of our community the week of Christmas. We already have 115 families that will be receiving food boxes and gifts for the holiday and will probably have another 25 families sign up for this great community effort before Christmas. The Macedon Community Christmas Program is a combined effort involving all the local churches, businesses and organizations.

More than ever, your support is crucial to our continued success in helping the needy of our community. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,
Mary Henning, Secretary
Social Ministry Committee of St. Patrick's Church, Macedon, NY

Airport Overnight

On Friday, November 14th, the Greater Rochester International Airport hosted 20 of our Cub Scouts for a program and sleepover. The program began with a visit from 5 therapy dogs. Their owners talked to us about the different ways the dogs help people and demonstrated many obedience tricks. After learning dog safety, the boys were able to greet and pet the 4 German Shepherds and 1 Golden Retriever. The dogs were all extremely friendly and well behaved, and some of our Cubs were able to conquer their fear of large dogs and feel more comfortable around them. Speaking of well behaved, after the presentation, one of our leaders got a comment from someone that our group of boys was the most well behaved group they had seen in 4 years of doing this. Way to go, boys - we are very proud of you!!!!

Next came security. A metal object was hidden on one of our boys, and a security guard scanned him with his detector wand to try and find it. He did. After a brief talk about airport security, the boys were processed through the real security to be able to get to the airline gates. We were just in time to see the Midtown Clock of Nations open and reveal it's 12 scenes of puppets dancing to music. The clock is on loan to the airport before it moves to a permanent home at Golisano Children's Hospital.

Once at the gates, a member of the Airport Crash Fire Rescue Team spoke to us about his job and even brought and put on his full gear for us. Then our guide said we could get on one of the planes but we had a job to do first before we could board. The Cubs formed lines and greeted about 70 people getting off their flight with high fives and, "Welcome to Rochester!". It made every passenger smile! The boys were then allowed to board the plane and everyone received complimentary pretzels.

On to the control room where every inch of the airport is monitored by camera. The boys felt sneaky because they were able to spy on their parents and leaders that stayed behind to set up camp for the night in the room that we were in. After a snack and a bit of watching Madagascar, it was time for some shut-eye. And eventually, all eyes were shut, dreaming of the airplanes that were right outside our window I'm sure.
