Memorial Day 2008 On Monday May 26th, 2008 the detachment participated in the annual Port Washington Memorial Day Parade. Led by Commandant John Bauman and the detachment Color Guard, made up of Chris Saccoccia, Mike Kummer, Rudy Jonak, and John Donovan, our contingent marched the 1 mile parade to the commanding cadence called out by John Meehan, under perfect weather and clear skies. We were fortunate this year to be accompanied by Marines from Recruiting Station New York, SSgt Mark Freeman and Sgt. Art Janas and their very elaborately painted "H3" Hummer. That truck is a real head turned which quickly won over all the Marines and the public, who came out in droves to view the parade. We, along with all the other veterans organizations and the other parade participants were heartily cheered all along the parade route. At the end of the parade route, Paymaster Stan Derby met us and made sure that we were all properly hydrated by providing sodas and "adult" beverages for those who needed a quick pick-me-up after the march. At the conclusion of the parade everyone rendezvoused at the John Phillip Sousa Bandshell for the memorial ceremony which included the Pledge of Allegiance, prayers for all our fallen American Servicemen, the National Anthem and several speeches by local veterans and politicians. The parde and memorial ceremonies were indeed a fitting way to remember all of the Americans who have died in defense of freedom and the United States.
