National Museum of the Marine Corps Trip, June 2007 This past June 8th, 9th and 10th, 2007, 17 Detachment members and 4 friends of the detachment made a "pilgrimage" to Marine Barracks 8th & I in Washington, D.C., The National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA. and several Monuments and Memorials in Washington. The Detachment had been planning this trip since late Feb, early March and all of the "Trip Committee's" hard work paid off handsomely! We departed Friday morning aboard our luxury bus and had a great time on the ride to Washington. We arrived in Washington just in time for our dinner at the Washington Navy Yard and a brief on current affairs inside the Corps by Det. member Lt Col. David Gurfein. Then it was off to Marine Barracks 8th & I to view the "Evening Parade". Unfortunately, even the Marine Corps can't control Mother Nature and about half way through the show, the heavens opened up with pouring rain, thunder and lightning, causing the rest of the parade to be canceled. The next morning, Saturday, after breakfast in the "Bruce Hall" dining facility aboard M.C.B. Quantico, we ventured to the N.M.M.C. , right outside the gates of Quantico. There we had the pleaure of meeting retired Marine Col. John Keenan (who is the Editor of the Marine Corps Gazette) and retired LtCol. Rich, "Wild Bill" Cody. Col. Cody is a grandson of the famous cowboy "Buffalo Bill" Cody! These two gentlemen gave us a private, personalized tour of the museum which was beneficial to all of us since we weren't familiar with the museum. Without their guidance, we would have roamed around the place like a lost mob! We can't thank you both enough for all you did to make our trip to the museum a truly worthwhile visit! The museum is an incredible display of the history of our Corps, which every Marine should experience! Sunday we had a terrific brunch at the "Clubs at Quantico". No one left that place hungry! After brunch we checked out of our hotel and traveled back to Washington, D.C. to tour and view the WW II Memorial, The Korean War Memorial and The Viet Nam War Memorial. Late Sunday afternoon we made the trip back to N.Y., all of us a bit disappointed that the weekend went by so fast. All told, the trip was an outstanding Marine Corps Weekend and a terrific experience, one that we'll be trying to plan again.
