"In the last analysis, what the Marine Corps becomes is what we make of it during our respective watches.
And that watch of each Marine is not confined to the time he spends on active duty.
It lasts as long as he is 'proud to bear the title of United States Marine.'"

Gen Louis H. Wilson, 26th CMC, 22 Aug. 1975

Happy 234th Birthday Marines!

The Port Washington, N.Y. Detachment of the Marine Corps League was chartered on 7 February 1986.
We are a group of active duty, reserve and former United States Marines and U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsmen who served in Marine Corps FMF units.
Our purpose? "Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps, as well as providing camaraderie and assistance to Marines, as well as to their widows and orphans."
We count among our members, Marine Corps veterans of Pelelui, Okinawa, and Iwo, the Korean War, Viet Nam, Operation Iraqi Freedom and every other "clime and place where we could take a gun." Our membership boasts officers and enlisted, grunts, air wingers, supply personnel, administrators and Marines from every other MOS of the Corps.
Our common bond is that we are Marines!

We meet the second Thursday of each month during the months September through June, at 2000 hrs (8:00 PM for those of you who forgot how to tell military time) at the BPO Elks Lodge at 30 Haven Ave. Port Washington, N.Y 11050.
*Our next meeting will be on Sunday, December 6, 2009 (*This meeting will be held during our annual Detachment Family Christmas Party. There will be no Thursday meeting in December!)
If you're presently serving either in the active Marine Corps, the reserves or you're an honorably discharged former Marine or FMF Corpsman, looking to connect with other Marines to swap sea stories, share memories, perhaps find an old friend or make some new friends, or if you want to rekindle that special "Esprit de Corps" that only Marines can share, we invite you to join us! Our annual dues are $36.00. Life memberships are also available for members in good standing.

Want to be one of us, or do you need to update or renew your membership? Download an application here

The Title can not be inherited.
    It can never be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price.
It is impossible to rent and can not be lent.
You alone have earned it with sweat, blood and hard work.
    You own it forever.

    The Marine's Prayer

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will.
Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear.
    Protect my family.
Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm.
Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance.
Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me.
Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.
If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.
Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer to my prayer.
    Amen

    The Marine's Hymn

From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli', we fight our countrys battles in the air, on land, and sea. First to fight for right and freedom and to keep our honor clean, We are proud to claim the title of -

    United States Marines

Our flags unfurl'd to every breeze from dawn to setting sun; We have fought in every clime and place where we could take a gun. In the snow of far-off northern lands and in sunny tropic scenes, You will find us always on the job
    The United States Marines

Here's health to you and to our Corps which we are proud to serve; In many a strife we've fought for life And never lost our nerve. If the Army and the Navy ever gaze on Heaven's scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by -

    SEMPER FIDELIS!

There's no such thing as an "ex" Marine!
    Esprit De Corps
"For the honor of the fallen, for the glory of the dead", Edgar Guest wrote of Belleau Wood, "the living line of courage kept the faith and moved ahead." They are all gone now, those Marines who made a French farmer's little wheatfield into one of the most enduring of Marine Corps legends. Many of them did not survive the day, and eight long decades have claimed the rest. But their action has made them immortal. The Corps remembers them and honors what they did, and so they live forever. Dan Daly's shouted challenge takes on its true meaning -- if you hide in the trenches you may survive for now, but someday you will die and no one will care. If you charge the guns you may die in the next two minutes, but you will be one of the immortals. All Marines die, in the red flash of battle or the white cold of the nursing home. In the vigor of youth or the infirmity of age all will eventually die, but the Marine Corps lives on. Every Marine who ever lived is living still, in the Marines who claim the title today. It is that sense of belonging to something that will outlive your own mortality that gives people a light to live by and a flame to mark their passing. Marines call it esprit de corps!

February 7, 2008 marked the 22nd Anniversary of the Port Washington Detachment Charter. Thanks to those Marines who back in 1986 got together and formed our detachment, we have had the opportunity to meet, get to know and bond with Marines. And as necessary, we render help and assistance to fellow Marines, at home and abroad. Keep that camaraderie and "Esprit de Corps" alive! Come to the meeting and be a part of your detachment!
We joined the League to maintain our association and camaraderie with Marines! We include among our members, Marine Corps veterans who have fought and thankfully survived every conflict the United States has faced from World War II through today, along with other Marines who never heard a shot fired in anger. Our one common thread; we are all Marines!
It is the participation, support, interest and involvement of all of our members which ultimately makes our detachment successful!
Each and every Marine is vital to continuing our mission of service and support of the Corps. So if you haven’t been to a meeting in a while, plan on attending one soon!

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, December 6, 2009 Come by and support your detachment! Say hello to old friends and perhaps meet some new friends you never even knew you had!
