A message from the chapter coordinator –

As you can see by the new logo above Project Linus Orange County has grown to serve more children.  I moved in the fall to Lords Valley, Pa. in Pike County, PA.  The only way

I would do that was to be able to continue as the Chapter Coordinator of Project Linus.  I have grown to love the chapter & the wonderful people I have met through being associated with Project Linus.  So now we are the Orange Co, NY & Pike Co, PA chapter of Project Linus which will enable us to help more children.

Due to scheduling arrangements with the Community Center in Middletown,  we were not able to get the Community Center on set Saturdays so I am listing all our meeting days in Middletown, NY.  I am looking forward to starting to have meetings and blanket days in Pike Co, PA in the near future and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make & deliver the following blankets

since January 2001 ---

BLANKET MAKING DAYS

February 19th and October 15th 2005

Our blankets days have been "sew" successful that we are

having at least two a year.

Thank You – On a Personal Note

After a delivery of blankets, a blanketeers wrote - I dropped the bags of blankets off to Cornwall Hospital on Saturday night and the nurses wanted me to tell you how much they love getting them.  They said even the parents are thrilled and so appreciative--not just the children.  They were also excited to see some of the blankets done with Christmas yarn and couldn't wait to give them out. It is so nice to see the appreciation--it makes it all worthwhile.

There are many grateful children and families across the counties.  So often we do not hear about it until.  However, the nurses and staff are always so grateful to have the blanket.

As I delivered blankets to the Bon Secours Emergency room I was greeted by a nurse who I had never met before.  She said I must tell you about a family we had here with 4 children who all were sick and obviously not from the area and just traveling through under not best of conditions.  Each one was sick and laying on the floor waiting while the other child was being seen.  When the nurse seen this she got out a Project Linus blanket for each child and the child loved the blanket and it was just perfect for that child.  She said she wondered how of all the blankets and children, the blankets could match up so well and I told her it must have been the Project Linus Angel.

Even when a thank you note is not received, you can be assured that the blankets are making a difference just by the number of places that want their children to receive Project Linus blankets!

BLANKET MAKING DAYS

 Town of Wallkill Community Center

Please stop by between 10am to 3pm    No experience needed!
There's a job for everyone to do. Come and join in the fun.

What to bring: Any finished blankets, fabric, scissors, sewing or quilting supplies and tools. Your "easy to carry" sewing machine.  We will be finishing up blankets.  Sewing isn't the only job! We will need lots of help ironing, cutting, pinning and tying square knots. Bring a lunch if you wish.

Community service hours are available by participating at these events.

The young at heart of all ages are invited to share their knowledge, skills, time and energy to make a blanket for a child in need of a hug.  Sewing Machines, material, & yarn will be available to make blankets on site.

Instructions in various skills will be offered.

Project Linus Quilt Patterns

are still available from QuiltersWarehouse via the internet at www.quilterswarehouse.com

When you purchase Project Linus patterns for $10 each pattern, 100% of the proceeds

go to Project Linus and you can designate the Orange County / Pike County chapter.

Kids Helping Kids

This program has gotten off to a great start!  Woodbury and Greenwood Lake Libraries took part in the through their Summer Reading Program.  They had the children in their summer reading program color muslin squares and quilts were made and given back to the library to hang the quilts for a time so the community could see the children’s work.

Through a speech I gave to the Ramapo Catskill Children’s Librarians, the children’s librarians will be introducing Project Linus to the community through the coloring of muslin squares to be made into blankets.  Volunteers are always needed to attach freezer paper to muslin and cut the squares for this project.  If you can help, please contact the chapter coordinator for the supplies needed to make the squares or you can make your own muslin squares and donate them to the chapter for use in this program.  Church groups, schools and scouts are continuing to participate in the coloring of squares.

Do you belong to a group that would like to participate or can you help by turning these wonderful blocks into a blanket??  Please contact the chapter coordinator.

Blanket Specifications

This is an on-going project do not feel pressured or guilty to meet any deadline.
A tag is sewn into each blanket

© New, Handmade, Washable (do not use wool) / Dryable.

Suitable Materials: 100% cotton fabric, flannel, polar fleece, or acrylic yarn. Made in infant, child or teen friendly colors.  Remember that these blankets should be colorful, cheerful, and cuddly.

SIZES

(Please, none smaller than these sizes - measurements are approximate)

#36" X 36"             #40" x 60"             #60" x 72

Teen-sized blankets - should be at least 2 yards in length and since polar fleece is 50" wide, a 2-yard piece of fleece makes a nice blanket for a teenager.  Remember that a big blanket will fit all sizes of kids; a small blanket will fit only the little kids. Blankets of any size will be accepted, because kids come in all different sizes!

© Don’t . . .

v    Make blankets out of tapestry, upholstery fabric, burlap, felt, vinyl, wool, wool yarn, or any other scratch fabrics or laces.  Also, please do not donate these materials, we just cannot use them.

v    Attach buttons or similar decorative items to a blanket.  They can be a choking hazard to children.

v    Use paint to decorate a blanket.

©Please Note . . .  Blankets that smell of smoke or strong chemicals (including perfumed fabric softeners) or have pet hair on them are not acceptable as they may produce a severe allergic reaction in the children.  Unfortunately, washing these blankets does not always remove the problem.

© If in doubt, would the blanket you plan to donate be welcomed by you and your child if you were on the receiving end of a Project Linus blanket?
