Marine Of The Year
Commandant Ed VanLeuvan announced his selection for Marine of the Year for 2008 at the Marine Corps Ball. Rich is our resident photographer and is responsible for most (if not all) the photos you see on this site. A member of the Leathernecks, he is actively involved in their functions as well as ours. Good job, Marine. Commandant James MacMillan named Bob this year. If you go to meetings, attend League events, or just show up on a Friday night, you have seen Bob. He's not just a pretty face behind the bar, he's also always there when someone needs a hand with anything. Well done. Semper Fi.
Commandant James MacMillan announced his selection for Marine of the Year for 2006, Jim McGunnigle, for his outstanding service to the community and the League. Jim had several successful fundraisers. Congratulations and Semper Fi, Jim. Hank was commended for his service to his country and to his Detachment over many years. Hank had the thankless job of putting out the Detachment newsletter in the days before today’s available technology. I can appreciate this much more than most members, since Hank passed the baton of the newsletter to me several years ago, long before I realized what it entailed. Thanks to Hank and Marines like him, we have the outstanding Detachment we enjoy today. Congratulations on a job well done and an award well deserved.
At the 229th Birthday Ball on 11 November 2004, Commandant VanLeuvan announced the recipient of our annual Marine of the Year Award. He prefaced his presentation by saying that this year’s awardee is a Marine that should be an example to all members of the Sunrise Detachment, and all Marines.
This year’s choice was a Marine who has not only held offices that culminated in two terms as Commandant, but is also consistently the first to report for work details and has never thought that any chore was beneath her.
She also has the Detachment first in their thoughts, never thinking of personal gain or recognition, and she is always looking out for the best interests of the Detachment. She has served for many years as our Paymaster, a thankless job that she has done willingly and professionally. She has protected the financial interests of the Detachment and with her able guidance, the Sunrise Detachment is financially secure.
For her years of service to the Marines and the League, Patricia Jamilkowski is well deserving of this award.
Pat served as a Women Marine during her service and she still embodies the true spirit and meaning of being a Marine. On one occasion, while the Detachment was mustering for a parade, an elderly gentleman walked up to Pat and asked, “What do they call Women Marines?”, Pat immediately replied, “Marine!!!”. With that the man did a quick about face and retreated, knowing that male or female, we are all Marines. You can see that fierce pride that she has in the way she carries herself and in what she expects from her fellow Marines. Congratulations Pat, it is an honor to serve with you in the Sunrise Detachment. |
