NEWS RELEASE For further information contact: Donna Herring, dmherring@embarqmail.com, 740-405-4594 Karen Holt, karen.holt@yahoo.com, 740-924-9355 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (September 26, 2007): CHARITY AUCTION FOR CAPTAIN SCOTT HOUSE On the last Sunday in September, from noon to 6 pm, the shelter house at Emswiler Farms, on Morse Road west of the village of Jersey in Licking County, will be sending up barbeque smoke signals, vibrating to live music, and thrilling to cries of "Going once, going twice, sold!" It's the First Annual Hog Roast & Auction for the historic Captain Scott House, rescued from demolition and relocated in Alexandria. A silent auction runs throughout the event, and a live auction starts at 5:00 pm, after the bands Heavens to Betsy and Marquis 66 have warmed the crowd up with country and classic rock. Individuals and businesses from all over central Ohio are donating items and services for the auction and hog roast. This is the time and place to get a basket of gourmet locally- grown herbs and jellies, coupons for an oil change, gift certificates for a one-hour massage, or one of many other items donated. Get something you need or want, support the preservation of local history, and have a lot of fun all at the same time! The Captain Scott House was built circa 1870 for Joseph M. Scott, who was an outspoken abolitionist, prominent farmer and local historian over his lifetime. The house is a classic example of the Victorian Italianate architectural style and includes a carved spiral staircase among other handcrafted details. It had to be moved from the intersection of state routes 37 and 161, and is now in its final location a mile northwest of where it was built, resting on oak timber cribbing while the basement is being built underneath it. Once the house is on its basement and stabilized the restoration phase of the project will begin. Current plans are for the first floor to be a community center, possibly with a gallery room, and for the second floor to be a museum focused on the Abolitionist movement and the Civil War and how each affected Ohio families and the regional economy. The Friends of Captain Scott Committee of the Alexandria Community Council is the group organized to save the house. The Alexandria Community Council is a nonprofit group active for over 75 years in support of community events and projects in the village and St. Albans township. To support this historic preservation project, attend the Hog Roast & Auction, or send your tax-deductible donations to the Alexandria Community Council, Friends of Captain Scott Committee, P.O.
